from Goldeneye to Modern Warfare theres something about FPS's that's been irritating me.
I'm talking about reloading. it bugs me when the main character fires one shot, takes the entire clip out of the gun and puts in a new one, and the ammunition from the old clip just magically transfers over to the new one. If you don't understand what I mean, imagine the revolver in RE4. to reload the gun, Leon Kennedy drops all the bullets in it on the ground, even if you fire one shot. instead of losing the perfectly good bullets he drops with the spent shells, he still apparently has them.
I know it just simplifies gameplay, but everytime I see it I'm just weirded out. Has anybody else noticed this or anything like it? I don't mean something unrealistic, just something that breaks suspention of disbelief or geneally bugs you.

Hahaha, I was actually thinking about the a couple of days ago while playing RAGE. I'm have the habbit of spamming the reload button all the time, so it's particularly prevalent for me.

But yeah, it doesn't bother me very much, and it's understandable why they do it.

Yes, I have noticed that. I always thought it was an acceptable break from reality. Cue to me being thoroughly irritated when SWAT4 kept track of how many bullets you had in each magazine.

Because switching to a fresh mag and finding out as a large monster completely capable of pasting you that it only had 2 rounds in it is infuriating.

Not all FPS games do this, i'm fairly sure in Operation Flashpoint/Red River unless your clip is empty when you remove it, it will stay in your inventory with how many bullets were left after changing your mag.

Uhh. The only game I played without this "unrealistic" weapons system was... Bet on Soldier? Lost some ammo before I realized you lose if you reload too early.

It wasn't a very good game.

The hyperrealistic FPS games don't do this. With "hyperrealistic" I mean those without Wolverine-like health regeneration and a focus of actual recreation of armed combat (Operation Flashpoint, RO2, Raven Shield).

Then there are FPS games which are not designed to be realistic. TF2, Serious Sam, CS, HL. They don't need real life logic to be immersive.

And finally there is CoD and such... Pseudorealistic BS where half of the people claim it is a simulation of realistic combat and half scream this game was never intended to be realistic
CoD's original popularity steamed from a ability to weave impressively well constructed narratives trough jaw dropping set pieces with a degree of realism not see out side of the realm of oppressively difficult games like flashpoint.

Well, I've played Socom 2 on the PS2, whre you keep your half empty mags, which is very irritating, and BF2, where you throw the half empty mag away, which you'll tun out of ammo twice as fast as you would in Modern Warfare. these two might be more realistic, but it's just so goddamn irritating. Gameplaywise, I prefer the ''keep all of you're ammo in one big pile'' method.

Not every game does this. The Darkness isn't really focused on gunplay but it does this. Fire a few bullets then reload and you have lost the whole clip or magazine or whatever.

Valve's Alien Swarm (technically a third-person shooter) was the first game I ever played with realistic ammunition, where if you reload, you lose some ammo. Unfortunately, I did not realize that this was the case until the first time I dropped almost a whole clip while reloading. At first, I was frustrated, because I'd grown used to the usual shooter magically-keeping-your-bullets routine. But I got used to it eventually, and I found it to be sort of a nice game mechanic, because you had to be a lot more careful with your ammo. But, at the same time, I still sort of like the magic simplicity of games like Doom or, indeed, CoD.
