Protip:
There will always be people who don't get some of the songs, and they will always ***** about it, particularly accusing you of inserting stuff that they couldn't possibly know because it's before their time (never mind that oldies stations are easy to tune into etc). It's your perogative as quizmaster to make the thing HARD. Chuck in whatever you like.

Besides, Teen Spirit? For 12-17 year olds? It doesn't get played hardly at all any more. I bet at least half of them wouldn't be able to name it, ubiquitous as it was in the early 90s. Ditto quite a lot of the others :p

I'm the team expert on music rounds if I'm taking part in a pub quiz or whatever, but a 50% hit rate on those things is still considered exceptionally good going. There's all kinds of esoteric stuff, usually tailored towards the quizmaster's mates racking up a nice score in the corner.

Right now i'm making a music quiz (for the age 12 to 17) and i'm searching for music.

This made me wonder, are there songs everyone should know. There were some that crossed my mind.

Smells like team spirit - Nirvana
Ironic - Alanis Morriset
time after time - Cindy Lauper
Wonderwall - Oasis
Fast car - Tracy Chapman
Seven nation army - The white stripes

Some from every genre, what are your thoughts on this?
You say that but the only one i've heard of is wonderwall, although there's a fair chance that I may have heard the other songs and not realised that they were said songs

I loved TEEN Spirit when I was 14. Now it's one of my least favorite Nirvana songs. For nostalgia's sake, I find Ironic oddly comforting in spite of not one thing in that song being actually Ironic. I never cared for Cindy Lauper but Willie Nelson did a badass cover of True Colors. I see no System of a Down, Pixies, Radiohead, or any of the far superior White Stripes songs

Wayward Son (Kansas)

Paint It Black (Rolling Stones)

Freebird (Lynyrd Skynyrd)

Ace Of Spades (Motorhead)

And lastly 4′33″ (John Cage)

The last one can be heard live anywhere if you just sit down and listen long enough for all three movements.

But you don't really care for music, do ya?
I see your Leonard Cohen and raise you one Jeff Buckley.

OT: Beethoven's 9th Symphony.
Ugh, heretic. Same reason Johnny Cash does Hurt better than Trent Reznor: They are the proper age to sing of hurt and loss.

Gorillaz -- O Green World.

NO ONE I KNOW KNOWS THIS SONG! And that's very sad, since it is made of pure awesomeness.

Not gonna lie, if you plan on hanging round any forum ever:

But for songs that could change people's lives:

Joking aside, I pick:

Well it's not about how good the songs are but more about how well known they are.

So it's a quiz to see how well one knows well known songs? Well, then, better load up on your Wacka Flacka and Justin Bieber.

Completely unrelated note: I've been giving that kid a pass because I literally thought he was 12 or 13. I just found out he turned 17 recently. So there is no excuse for him acting/dressing like that. If I were in that kid's high school I'd slap him and yell, "Stop doing that!"

There are simply too many songs, you can't just say "these 6 represent the best out there"

Bittersweet Symphony is good, listen to it

Off the top of my head, a couple of songs even those people living their entire lives in a basement tied to a radiator should know:

The Beatles - Yesterday
The Platters - Only You (And You Alone)
The Rolling Stones - Satisfaction
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Frank Sinatra - My Way
Louis Armstrong - What a Wonderful World
Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal
Bob Marley - Buffalo Soldier
The Clash - London Calling
Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive
Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall
