Considering they're not working on the title, I don't imagine they could, actually.

Tails actually looks like an engineer.
What?
I am an engineer, I work with a team of 200 engineers, none of us wander around carrying spanners or wearing goggles, we work on unigraphics, solidworks, procast etc. generating and testing 3D models. I might dive into the innards of my motorbike when I get home, but engineering qualifications didn't train me for that.
He looks like a wannabe mechanic, now there is some broad overlap in the fields, but calling a mechanic an engineer is like calling a paramedic a surgeon, they are completely different skill sets and it's insulting to assume one could do the other's job (or vice versa).
Relax.
It's the internet, specifically on a forum centered around video games where many people aren't going to have intricate knowledge of the differences between an engineer and mechanic, or a nurse practitioner and RN, or possibly even computer programmers and video game programmers.
A thread about a
Sonic game isn't really the place to get upset that someone misidentified your profession.
OT: I've made my opinion on this quite loudly known already, but hey, why not.
The new designs are stupid. Like,
really stupid. Tails and Amy look okay because they're mostly the same, but Sonic and Knuckles look so remarkably warped and mutated that I'm surprised anyone thought "Yeah, we should release those screens to the public". The in-game models shown in the trailer are particularly hilarious, with their plastic-y dead eyes and comically long legs.
As well, I don't hold as high esteem for the developer as other people appear to. The guy heading the company is a former Naughty Dog employee, yay? Except he was only an art director. And while you can't really fault the art direction of Naughty Dog games, they aren't what made things like
Crash Bandicoot so awesome. And the lead game designer is a guy whose only real game of note was
Comix Zone twenty years ago and a cancelled
Sonic game around the same time. Since then he's also gone on to work on such
classic games as
Spider-Man 3 and
Shrek 2. Plus, the company has been around since 2008 and released nothing. Obviously not necessarily an indication of anything, but I'm erring on the side of pessimism.
