So, there's going to be a new Sonic game either this year or next. It's called Sonic Boom, and it will be Nintendo exclusive. What's really got people talking, though, is the fact that the game is a "reimagining" of Sonic, complete with new character designs. Here are the designs in question:

Some people have been complaining about Knuckles's design, but I actually like it. The bandages make him look like a boxer, which fits his character.

I fail to understand what possessed Tails and Sonic to wear bandages...around their shoes...

To be perfectly honest, I am not overly fond of any of these designs. Except maybe Tails and Amy because they're exactly the same, but with new clothes.

Also, their legs. All of them They scream Dr. Eggmaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan! at me.

He looks like CM Punk...

I suppose the problem is to life long fans that Knuckles was the original Alt-Sonic, he was Shadow before Shadow ever existed. I mean look at the old Genesis games, he was as fast as Sonic, but still pretty fast.

Then the 3D games happen and he became more of a bruiser.

I kind of like of the designs. Tails actually looks like an engineer. Amy does not look like a stupid little girl.

Even Sonic is not to bad. I like the scarf, for whatever reason. I do think he is a bit tall and the amount of tape is silly.

Except Knuckles.

The body looks just WAY to top heavy. Dude, learn that every day isn't upper body day, and stop stuffing roids up your @$$.

A reboot of the franchise could be helpful, to cut off the undeeded characters and continuity. The show looks well animated, although I am not the largest fan of Sonic's voice here.

I've read an interview with the producer of this thing, and the people making it seem to have a real heart for it and seem genuine fans of the franchise. But I guess that if you want to go into tv animation, you HAVE to reinvent the style and look of it. (Like Sonic X, to a lesser extent, did back in the early 2000's.)

But all I can say outside the designs is WOW! The powerhouse of talent working on this thing! (Both the show and game) People who were responsible for Sly cooper, Jak and Dexter, Uncharted, and the pop culture juggernaut 'My little pony: Friendship is magic'. All putting their best efforts in putting this together.

I know it's not a good idea to get your hopes up, but I have a good feeling about this.

I've never liked the character design of the "Sonic" characters. Not any of them, ever. I tolerated them for the most part because while I don't love the Sonic games, I do think they can be fun from time to time. But quite frankly that Knuckles design is an abomination and should be burned in the pits of hell for all eternity. Sonic looks like he is more likely to serve me some expensive crappy coffee then fight evil. I'll hate Tails no matter what, but the design is at least par. Amy is probably the only well designed character out of the batch.

So they actually did it and called a Sonic game Sonic Boom well it may be ok I guess but I pretty much gave up on sonic after Sonic 2 (which was great..except for the halfpipe stages)

What?
I am an engineer, I work with a team of 200 engineers, none of us wander around carrying spanners or wearing goggles, we work on unigraphics, solidworks, procast etc. generating and testing 3D models. I might dive into the innards of my motorbike when I get home, but engineering qualifications didn't train me for that.

He looks like a wannabe mechanic, now there is some broad overlap in the fields, but calling a mechanic an engineer is like calling a paramedic a surgeon, they are completely different skill sets and it's insulting to assume one could do the other's job (or vice versa).

I am way past any sort of hype for a Sonic game at this point, so many have been so bland in recent years that getting my hopes up would just be counter-productive. That also means whenever a new, good Sonic game gets made I'll probably like it more anyways.

On the character design, I think that parts of it are bad, while others are good. As others have mentioned, I get why Knuckles wears bandages over his hands. I like that honestly, it fits. Props for that. However, why exactly does it look like he's been bench pressing entire cows for the last 2 weeks? Come on guys, I know anthropomorphic characters usually have odd proportions but that's just annoying. As for Sonic/Tails with the bandages? I can see what they were trying to achieve, but god damn it just makes them look so generic! That said, the semi-steampunk style to Tails isn't bad, I kinda like it... However, I need to point out that Amy looks exactly the fucking same as she normally does - could you try ANY less harder Team Sonic??

As for the gameplay, as I'm sure we all know it's going to be gimmicky and boring for the most part and will likely be frustrating and/or broken, at least combat wise. At best I'd assume it to be a crappy version of God of War's style of fighting, without the satisfaction of tearing the eyes out of your enemies. I'll judge everything else as it comes, but I'm pretty sure this one is going to be bad. If it turns out I'm wrong, hell, I might even pick it up at a sale sometime. But I strangely doubt that happening.

Looks like this photos timing was ill timed, Amy is mid-wink, Knuckles photoshopped himself a bit taller and bulkier- then to kick some sand in Sonics face made Sonic's arms blue. This of course was after they were all in a plane accident- all of them injuring their wrists ankles and Amy's back.

:| That is what I think of this pic........................
In a less retarded analysis...
Ehhh I'm not so opposed to it. Everyone seems upset at Knuckles being a big hitter but it kind of adds diversity to the group, Sonic is fast, Knuckles hits hard and glides/climbs, Tails flys and Amy is there to be annoying do some crazy acrobatics with her hammer.

If anything Knuckles should have been larger, this pic that I found way before the reveal really made me laugh- I think it's a neat idea:

I feel like this design choice was made to appeal to a new young audience, they saw the retarded characters in kids shows these days and decided to go in that direction.

It's a bad direction.

Honestly, I think it looks like they mapped Sonic renders over Crash Bandicoot models. But it actually looks pretty fun, I can't even remember the last platformer I saw that genuinely looked like it could be fun to play in the class of Jak n Daxter or Ratchet n Clank. Wish Sonic's legs didn't look so weird though... no insults to Knuckles, dude is CLEARLY jacked.

I knew Knuckles was doing steroids, I always knew.

I am thinking all the bandages are probably grip tape actually, overall it is good. I like them.

Knuckles though.. We gotta help him. Someone should put up an intervention.

I think he means as far as video games go if you see someone with goggles and/or lab coat they'll most likely handle your gear or something just video game logic
O.T. different but it'll grow on me personally I'm waiting for the bitching about how sonic looks this is the same people that bitched about his eye color

Considering they're not working on the title, I don't imagine they could, actually.

Relax.

It's the internet, specifically on a forum centered around video games where many people aren't going to have intricate knowledge of the differences between an engineer and mechanic, or a nurse practitioner and RN, or possibly even computer programmers and video game programmers.

A thread about a Sonic game isn't really the place to get upset that someone misidentified your profession.

OT: I've made my opinion on this quite loudly known already, but hey, why not.

The new designs are stupid. Like, really stupid. Tails and Amy look okay because they're mostly the same, but Sonic and Knuckles look so remarkably warped and mutated that I'm surprised anyone thought "Yeah, we should release those screens to the public". The in-game models shown in the trailer are particularly hilarious, with their plastic-y dead eyes and comically long legs.

As well, I don't hold as high esteem for the developer as other people appear to. The guy heading the company is a former Naughty Dog employee, yay? Except he was only an art director. And while you can't really fault the art direction of Naughty Dog games, they aren't what made things like Crash Bandicoot so awesome. And the lead game designer is a guy whose only real game of note was Comix Zone twenty years ago and a cancelled Sonic game around the same time. Since then he's also gone on to work on such classic games as Spider-Man 3 and Shrek 2. Plus, the company has been around since 2008 and released nothing. Obviously not necessarily an indication of anything, but I'm erring on the side of pessimism.

The designs are fine. Even the beefed up Knuckles. I think it's ridiculous how Sonic fans complain for something new or different, and then when that happens, they complain it's not like the old style. Some people just can't be pleased.

Funny enough, I'm complaining because I want more Sonic Generations and Sega is refusing to give it to me. But that's just me.

I won't deny my reaction to this is over-the-top, but I am going to give the game the opportunity to surprise me. A good game is a good game, regardless of how stupid the prerelease stuff might look. But they've supposedly been working on this title for two years now, and those character models still look like pre-alpha assets, which is just not very reassuring to me.

Fair enough, I guess. Generations was alright. But these games are being made by former Naughty Dog employees and people who worked on Ratchet and Clank. This is the direction they want to go. Honestly, it's in relatively good hands. And who's to say they won't do another Generations title later on.

Also, complaints about sports tape on the characters just seems silly to me, when it's a series that revolves around cartoon humanoid animals.

I wouldn't mind the tape if it weren't also around their shoes.

Even a franchise about anthropomorphic animals has limits on how far the suspension of disbelief will go.
