I haven't played a Sonic game since Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Can anyone besides EternalNothingness shed some anecdotal light on this game? Is it worth it, or is it another horrible Sonic title?

It's the best Sonic game since S&K.

The 3D levels are amazing. They recapture the feel from the Genesis games - That means momentum based platforming with a feel of exploration to it. Paths through the levels often split and merge in cool ways like in the old titles. Speed is back to something that is initially there more as a sense of the thing mixed in with the platforming. Again, just like in the Genesis games, you can eventually blast through the levels at high speed, but only once you've really learned the damn things. The controls are basically what Sonic used in Unleashed Day, they've just greatly improved the level design.

Oh, and the 2D levels are nice too.

In short yes. One of the best Sonic games I've played in years and there's some pretty cool mods for it too

Fantastic game. From what I hear it's pretty shitty on K&M though.

I got it but I wasn't very partial to it. To me, the Modern Sonic levels felt like they designed the gameplay the same way they did with Sonic and the Black Knight and the other Sonic games like that. I don't really like it much. I would've honestly preferred that they modeled the gameplay for Modern Sonic like they did in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. THAT was a fun Sonic(and arguably my favorite one) game.

Classic Sonic levels were just really difficult for me. You move too damn fast. I can't keep up with the level and I either get stopped a million times in 10 seconds by a wall that appeared from nowhere, or fall into a pit I never saw coming.

I'm honestly not much of a fan. :s

Definitely, it is the one of the best Sonic games even if it is a bit short. There are also plenty of mods being worked on that can extend the gameplay time.

Is that the one where they revisited old levels in 2/3d? If so, I had a lot of fun playing it, but never ended up finish after a particularly glitchy boss battle. It looked great and I enjoyed it, but my main gripe was that so few of the levels were classic Sonic level environments that I love. By the game the was halfway done, I was already playing remade Sonic Color levels, you'd think that a game like that would give you a few more Genesis-inspired ones. Maybe younger people would disagree, but I don't consider anything Sonic Adventure and older to be a "classic Sonic game".

It's pretty bad with K&M, but if you have an Xbox 360/PS3 controller it does support the gamepad.

I'm going to say what I said to TheBobmus the other day about it:
It really depends on if you can get behind the gameplay. "Classic" Sonic controls basically like the old 16-bit Sonic games, while "Modern" Sonic has less platform-based and more speed-based levels modeled after Sonic Colors. But it's basically the tightest and best-designed Sonic game in years, the level design (apart from goddamn "Crisis City", though it is slightly better than its '06 counterpart) is good for the most part, and the art direction and music are fantastic, along with it providing extra small challenge maps that function a bit like mini-Acts and will unlock musical tracks from older Sonic games as well as concept art.

For ten bucks? Hells yeah.

The 2-D sections really nail Sonic's old-school gameplay, and it's a bit cool seeing Classic Sonic running through Modern Sonic's levels.

This is also probably the best execution of 3-D Sonic gameplay I've played since Sonic Heroes.

If you're a fan of Sonic in any of his forms, I'd say totally go for it.

Hell yes it is worth it, it's one of the best Sonic games I've played in years. Definitely worth 10 quid. They really get the old Sonic gameplay right, and the whole game is a lot of fun. My only gripe with it is that I wanted more. The stages are a lot of fun and feel near on perfect. And the music is great!

Short, but very fun. The classic stuff is good ol' classic stuff and the modern bits are great(I wish there was more 3D though).
If you liked the classics you at least enjoy the game a 3rd of the time.

Yes. Extremely good platforming experience.

If you even remotely enjoyed the adventure series you will love this.

If you've been consistently disheartened by the dive in sonic game quality, you will be very pleasantly surprised by Generations.

EDIT: Seeing as you've been gone from the franchise for quite some time, I'll say that the game stands very well on its own merits. Classic sonic plays just like a level out of S3&K, but with updated graphics. The 3D sections are extremely enjoyable. It's only slightly lesser in quality than platforming giants like Mario Galaxy/Galaxy 2.

Do you mean the last one?

Yeah, easily the worst part of the game, which is astounding considering every other boss fight was absolutely great. I particularly enjoyed the re-vamped Egg mech from classic sonic(forget which game in particular), and when I got to finally beat the stuffing out of silver, the character nobody ever asked for.

No, I didn't end up getting that far in the game. I ran around the level with Shadow like 6 times looking for him before I realized he was glitched and just running straight into a wall and couldn't be killed.
