The PS Vita looks quite promising.
But in regards to the PSP, I still use mine frequently, it's probably my favourite handheld console.

I'm holding off on the Vita precisely because I felt burned by the PSP.

It's the games, stupid. When the system first emerged, my inital thought was "Damn! Nintendo is sooo unbelievably screwed." But the launch titles were a meager offering, and with several notable exceptions, improved little over time.

My PSP has been sitting in my junk drawer, and I don't have a lot of space left in that drawer for a new device. While Naughty Dog's launch involvement does give me some hope, you can't build a platform around one AAA title...

The two biggest PSP mistakes:
-UMDs: a completely unnecessary new medium that only proved to be insecure and lead to wide-spread piracy.
-PSN: idiotic retail price points rather than discounts, and too many good games never coming on PSN in the first place.

There were also far too few games that used connectivity between the PSP and the PS3, this could have been a great issue.

Combine that with horrid battery life, and other stupid decisions such as using the same plug for charging as for TV out (seriously WTF? I can't play a PSP game on the TV for more than 3 hours before the battery dies?), and it's no wonder this handheld failed. Let alone the decision to remove an analog joystick...

Hopefully the Vita will be much better, but I am not buying it at first.

Sounds like Sony is about to make exactly the same mistake.

Great portable games are not console games brought to the smaller screen.

But if I have to explain why to Sony, they have no business making portable devices.
