Sony Asks Users To Reset Passwords After 'Irregular Activity' Detected

Sony's not about to say why it's asking, but it's asking.

"The Sony Entertainment Network team routinely monitors for any irregular activity, and if such activity is detected, we may sometimes reset passwords of affected accounts to protect consumers and their account information," Sony's email to some unfortunate PSN customers reads. "Your account password was recently reset as part of this process." That means you'll need to make a new one as soon as you access your account. Sony has yet to confirm why it's sent this message to customers, except that it's not related to "an attack on, [or] a vulnerability in, our data servers."

Sony has every reason to be cautious when it comes to network security issues, after the odd security issues [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/110898-Sony-Admits-It-May-Never-Know-What-Happened-in-PSN-Attack]. At least this time it's telling people what's going on, which is an improvement over last time.

With luck, the situation will ease in the new year. In the meantime, Sony encourages you "to keep a close eye on your account for any unusual activity including emails about transactions you did not perform."

Umm... this is really old news... like more than a week old. Actually it's from November 26. You may only be getting your email now but it's been going on for a couple of weeks.

Since Sony's not admitting a breach, I bet this is in response to some other password leak (possibly Adobe) being used to get into Sony accounts for people who reuse their passwords.

P.S. Thanks

I thought the same thing. It's probably related to the recently revealed Facebook, LinkedIn and Google password list that is apparently available online.

It could also just be that the issue has been more prevalent lately, prompting the article, because I know it only happened to me about 2 days ago. Either way, I assume it's still going on, so the issue is still at least somewhat newsworthy.
