Sony Confirms New "High-End" PS4, But Won't Show it at E3

My thoughts exactly.

The rumours being that the NX will be at least slightly more powerful than the PS4 and Xbone, I have no doubt in my mind that these new consoles are being released purely to steal what little thunder Nintendo had.

Either that or they just found the perfect opportunity to saturate the market and pump out more products, they can just play dumb and say "Well, Nintendo did it".

Nintendo announces new console, with a "new concept" and Sony and MS both shit themselves because last time that happened the Wii happened and both of them scrambled to match it, both falling well short of even looking like they were going to catch up with the Wii sales.

And of course MS and Sony don't have the kind of first party portfolio and mascots Nintendo do. MS has as bigger financial cushion than Nintendo does (but there's only so long that MS is going to take losses on the XBox division) but Sony really doesn't as they're still billions in the red. This whole thing just confirms that Sony's dominance during the PS4 reveal wasn't due to the smart planning or business acumen but because they got lucky.

Sony just need to drop the divisions that are losing them money. They are still making Phones and TVs despite pitiful market shares against the Korean powerhouses Samsung and LG. I mean they bought out Ericsson for more than $1Bn in 2012... and where did that get them? (I'll tell you, a grand total of 2% market share in the mobile communications market in 2013).

Sony interactive entertainment (gaming division) is profitable, as is Sony Pictures Entertainment (a lot of their movies may get critically panned but they still make a hell of a lot more than their costs at box office).

I think Sony played this generation well at the start, Microsoft may have shot themselves in both feet at the start but you can't deny Sony didn't take full advantage of that.

This whole new console move from both companies though just reeks of scrambling to cobble something together so they have something to announce at the same time as each other are announcing things. Nintendo is like "Yeah, NX baby", so then Sony is like "Shit.. um PS4K baby!" and then MS is like "well, fuck.. Xbox 1.5 AND 0.5 baby!"

But can it emulate PS3 games?

No. PS3 uses cell processor. dont expect emulation any time soon (and by soon i mean maybe in a decade or two)

It's tempting to go to PC.

Just put off by compatibility issues and individual parts that cost more than a PS4.

If you want the best possible parts - sure. but if you just want PS4-equivalent experience then the price difference is minimal.

For fucks sake, will Sony and Microsoft stop jerking our chains and just say what the hell the differences will be?

I highly doubt that, whoever-you-are. If that is the case, why make the machine at all?

The main difference will be a HDCP version 2.3 (or 2.2, if their production is lagging) which means the main difference will be that Sony and Co will be able to dictate how, when and why we watch video/streaming content under the guise of "evil pirates may record it and we cant have that".

The main reason why they are doing this is form factor manufacturing. GPU developers are moving to 14/16nm developement and so are the production factories. the consoles are still on 20 nm chips. To continue producing 20 nm chips when most factories have been re-geared to 14/16nm chip production would actually cost them more than to develop new more powerful chips. technology has moved to the point where keeping the old production is more expensive than the new stuff.

The fact that any game without a robust anti cheating system will be useless for multiplayer is one reason.
I love my PC, but there are issues with the platform, the N64 expansion port didn't kill consoles, and an upgraded PS4 won't either.

You mean just like console (or are we still pretending consoles have no cheaters?). Maybe the developers would actually develop proper server sanity checks that wont allow cheaters then? Who knew we would regress in that department thants to console p2p multiplayer.

I didn't say consoles are cheater free, I said PC games without robust anti-cheating systems in place are useless on the PC, I'm sure a few people figured out how to hack or glitch in GTA for the PS4, but for the PC it's script kiddy hell.
Don't kid yourself, hacks and scripts are much worse on the PC, it's a great platform but it's open endedness also results in the ability to easily manipulate the system, to say it's comparable to current gen consoles is disingenuous.

And did you really just try to blame p2p multiplayer on consoles? I know the PC/console fanboy war is vicious but that's just funny. What kindof reply would I use against that? Maybe pull out "maybe if 90-95% of PC players didn't pirate their game developers would give a shit about PC fans", because that's where that logic takes you.

Thats because GTA has the worst multiplayer system it can. Rockstar should be absolutely ashamed for even pushing something like this to release.

Yes, p2p multiplayer is on consoles. We were happy having our dedicated servers on PC but then consoles decided to do multiplayer, but couldnt do dedicated servers because they are shit systems that wont let users host servers, so they started using p2p because why would company pay for servers whne they can not pay for them and keep the profit. Sadly this became so popular that multiplayform games dropped dedicated servers altogether. P2p was invented by consoles, for consoles but it didnt stay on consoles. Not that it had any right to exist to begin with.

You do know that console piracy is as rampant as PC piracy, right?

We will see what will offer this neo and xbox. we will be fixed soon. It is sure we can not say a lot about these two new consoles. I look forward to see the difference compared to the ps4.
