As a fairly avid gamer and customer of PSN I'm not happy about this attack, I don't see why people would be motivated to do this. Is it because they genuinely have some personal vandetta against sony, they are just doing it for "shits and giggles", are they just power hungry geeks who want to show the world that they are powerful or is it something ultimately more sinister

My opinion is that this sort of theft is on par with robbing a large bank and I don't think these 'activists' are aware of the implications, I read an article yesterday in which the US chief of defense said something along the lines of "a cyber attack on the pentagon may be met with military force and you could have an ICBM knocking on your door", albeit a little far fetched I still think they won't take to kindly. Also these armchair thieves will not last very long if they are sent to prison with people who rob banks and jack cars the old fashioned way without a computer.

They want your personal info to sell to telemarketing salesmen. As for the sony vendetta thing maybe ps3 is easier to hack than xbox.

I'm still sticking to the idea that they don't like how Sony is handling the whole jailbreaking thing. Although at this point I doubt that it is that and it's really just blind aggression and the fact that they have the ability to.

Why? Sony pretty much handled the jailbreaking thing the exact same was every other company does. Other then the removal of the other os which really wasnt a major issue and if it was it sure as hell took them a long time to get around to hacking them.
Most tried to make a move to say it's illegal to do it(and it usually doesn't pass, just ask Apple), not outright go and sue anybody who does it; essentially burning anybody who gets in the pathway. The push to hack was likely because of it was because they were making legal ground around this time with the case against GeoHot, that is when Anonymous got on them about it and I'm still sticking with the idea that a smaller group from within that decided to get a bit more hostile than the rest of the group.

This is all speculation, but with people like that, I'd say it's a plausible reason. The initial attack was for that, but at this point it's come down to hacking Sony because you're not a cool kid if you don't.

Meh, assholes are gonna be assholes. I might have been in support of some sort of action against Sony, but when that action harms the people you are supposedly representing you shouldn't even bother trying to come up with a viable reason.

On the other hand Sony hasn't handled it all that well and since the initial hack they haven't, according to the sources I've read, even really done anything about their security which is probably encouraging the newer attacks.
