the only reason its being done here in aus is to leave an impression, aus seems to be full of people (those who know what they're doing excluded) who will not stand for piracy and therefore that will stop me when i go to buy a modded ps3 because its retro (just bought a nice little modded ps2 so i can play US games). many use these mods/firmware so they can play other regions.

PS3 owners should be allowed to use this product. Using it already violates your warrantly and prevents you from ever using your PS3 online, so it doesn't hurt anyone but the person using it. If there was some way to only let you download games you own, this system would be perfectly fine.
Actually you only get banned from psn if you jailbreak while online. Meaning if you disconnect your internet, insert dongle, jailbreak, remove dongle, reconnect, you're set.

If Sony and the other major publishers didn't charge almost double the prices for their games in Australia, as compared to other regions, then Australians wouldn't see mod chips as being so attractive. Current point. Many PS3 and 360 games retail at $120 Australian Dollars. With the current conversion rate, that would be expecting Americans to pay $106 for their new games. We know that in the US new games are around the $50-60 dollar mark. That means we'd like to see games around the $70. It's a pipe dream, and a sore point.
Thankfully, PS3 games have no region protection, so we can (and I do) import them rather than pay the local price. We're not so lucky when it comes to the 360 though.

I don't advocate piracy. I do pay for my games, and generally import them. That means waiting a few days before I can get my purchase though. A mod chip on the other hand is more of an instant gratification. I can see the appeal, even though I wouldn't go that route.

So they've got like two days to win a court case? Doesn't shit like this go for months? I don't think Sony have QUITE thought this through.

Also, this. I HATE buying new games because it's like selling a kidney. And they stay at ridiculous prices for months. If I see a used version of a new game, I'll buy it. They're trying to make the most out of Australian Gamers, but hate it when we chose a cheaper alternative because we can't afford the prices.

Thanks heavens I have... connections... *cough*

Not at all. It depends on the user...not the device. A perfectly honest and legit person can use this thing legally if they choose to. Not all of them are crooks and rip OFF ( noticed that I spelled that CORRECTLY? )developers. Just the lowlifes do that.

Yeah.

How about "Wanting to play video formats not 'allowed' on your console"? Or wanting to play out-of-region discs?

This might also be a way for those affected by the OtherOS removal to gain that ability back.

If your sole reasoning for not allowing things is "they might be used for illegal purposes," then you shouldn't be allowed to own *ANY* property that isn't monitored by your government, 24/7, on the off-chance that you might someday do something illegal.

Do you know how naive you are sounding? They might be used for something illegal? Sorry for bursting your bubble, but it's the most obvious thing that more than 80% of people that buy this will use it to screw over developers.

And that's fine. There are laws which allow companies to sue those people, and win. When regulators and law enforcement systems act like Mob Enforcers for business, we all lose.
