Whether you were being sarcastic or not, I'd suspect most companies do that with their projects. After all, Microsoft isn't going to abandon LIVE just because it's on 360 and they have to move on to 8th-gen. Last-gen stuff does not suddenly become obsolute when a newer version arrives, that's practically a proven fact 2^267,00- FUCK, STUPID BOOK!!!!
I sure hope that all three companies are using all the information and experience that they've had already to start planning the next generation. Microsoft certainly needs to keep developing Live, Sony needs to (finallly) birth Home as an alpha, and Nintendo needs to... well, buy space real estate or something with all their Wii-profit. I hear Pluto is up for sale now. In any case: all three companies are going to keep developing their online capabilities since that seems to be the trend in console gaming. As DLC becomes more prevalent and integral to console gaming there needs to be a platform with which to market that content. I have no experience with Home but a 6-month beta... really?

Also, Hitchhiker's is a great book, I'm glad you're reading it. 1 question though: do you really need to reference it in every post in this thread?

Answer: 42, obviously.

Eh, better to put a big "BETA" sign on it than to not have one and feel even more backlash from people. HOME could definately improve substantially, but right now I like it for what it's supposed to do.

And yes, I do need to reference it in most of my posts for now.

And yes, the better answer would have been 42.

Oh look, the universe just imploded.

Op, I think I heard logic go away in a puff of smoke (shit, stupid book...)
They're still catering for that thing? It's been long forgotten for an age now, except by people that own one of course.
Games are still being made for the PS2 (Persona 4 or something comes to mind). Therefore, your logic of "The 8th gen is coming, stop supporting this stuff!" is bullshit when it doesn't matter what gen it's from. It can still be supported.

EDIT: And just a thought, maybe HOME would be converted to this mythical 8th-gen console? I dunno, maybe, just maybe, if they do a little coding and stuff, HOME would be supported in the PS4 or something. I dunno, it's not like LIVE was converted from the original Xbox to the 360, or backwards compatibility was anything important, or Blu-ray is actually compatible with DVDs or something, no sir, because the next iteration is coming up in a few years, we should drop everything.

Of course.
Actually, you might be on to something there. Maybe they've given up with this gen, and have started preparing for gen 8 with this literal beta.

That's genius. Seriously, that's the best idea Sony's had in an age; if you're right, then it might actually work.

I was being serious, but I can see a sarcastic tone to what I wrote.

I'm not saying that because there's a Gen 8, Gen 7 will be useless (quite the contrary, I prefer the previous two generations over this one), but that its popularity will diminish to the point that the devs and owners will just start ignoring it. The PS2 was obviously a radical success, and its popularity gives Sony reason to continue milking revenue out of it. But the PS3... well, it hasn't been so successful. That's the problem, but if you're right about HOME being the test drive for a new gaming generation, then maybe Sony can redeem their recent mistakes.

Eh, I'd imagine that HOME would be out of beta and be properly supported (which I do suspect it will be, as a while ago I read an article that stated about 30 companies were commited to support HOME (most of the video game companies), I'll find it if I can) and if the next-generation comes along then they'll support it there to. It's not that hard to predict, Sony has put too much effort into this to suddenly drop it when the next-gen comes.

I'm not disagreeing with you there. Having it around now means that the PS4 will have a serious head start when the time comes, provided that it works.

Now all I need to do is hope it has backwards compatibility.

The only thing I ever found Home useful for was creating a short, fat guy with a pink afro and porn-star-mustache who would stand around doing the "running man."

Other than that, it just seemed like some half-finished version of xbox live, with all the users represented as avatars that look like they belong in a Bethesda game.

No. At most, giving the PS4 a 6-year window after PS3 came out (as opposed to 5 years like the MS/Nintendo consoles), this fall it will be 3 years old. That gives the PS3 only 3 years (not 4 or 5) until it is replaced. Yes the PS3, like the PS2 and PSX before it, may continue to thrive after it has been ousted by the new model, but a little over a year before the new console releases, the priority of every dev will be to make new PS4 games, sidelining PS3 projects because they want a launch title. So that gives even less time, say a year and a halt to two years, before developers abandon the PS3 for the PS4. Yeah, they may go back to PS3 games after they secured some footholds with the PS4, but with the new console out, priority will always be with the Gen8's.

And if you think we won't have a new console by 2011/2012, you are deluding yourself. At the pace computers are expanding, 5 years between console generations is about the longest they can go without finding themselves lagging behind. If there isn't a new X-Box, Nintendo Doohicky, and PS4 within three years from now, then PCs will dominate the market like never before.

(Also worth mention: The true attraction to consoles is the guarantee that games will always work, no futzing about with system settings, no compatibility issues. Plug and play. Consoles fucked up on this as far back as the N64, with the "Memory Expansion" making it possible for the first time ever, to have a game for a console, that might not actually work with the console. Now, with the network services - pay or free - and hard drives, the additional problem that games can be released buggy because they can patch them later, and the cost of consoles being disturbingly close to PC prices, the consoles are losing the one advantage they had over computers. I see the Gen7 as the twilight of the console, and we may not see many more generations before their own complexity render them too much like real computers for people do bother with them. But that's just my predictions and observations.)
I am sorry, but you are still making the least bit of sense to me. I've already discussed this with Lord Krunk, new technology does not mean that old technology is obsolute. Your first argument was that Sony should, for some reason, stop working on HOME because the PS4 is right around the corner in the next few years. Isn't it possible that, I dunno, maybe HOME would convert over to the mythical PS4? Isn't it possible that Sony is using HOME as a continual project to be supported over time, I wouldn't imagine Sony suddenly dropping it just because the PS4 came along.

It's not like Microsoft kept the LIVE system from the Xbox to 360, no siree, they abandoned it as soon as they made the 360. I wonder what life could have been like with that online system...
Oh, and it's totaly not like having backwards compatibility, god forbid that companies made sure their products could support previous last-gen technologies, it's not like it's one of the major complaints about the PS3 (back to the future here: even though it cut the price like everyone so desperately wanted).

The priority of developers will always vary, back when the 360 was the only "next-gen" platform, focus was still mainly on the PS2. But, of course, focus was mainly on the 360 because it was the "next-gen", it's not like a game like Okami ever came on the PS2 when the 360 came out.

I never denied consoles being released in 2011-2012, though I'd find it very stupid if any one of them did. Surprisingly enough, it's not just about the hardware in a console despite what anyone tells you, it's what you can do with it. Consoles will always be inferior to PC hardware, so why does it even matter? Consoles and PCs are two completely different markets, so what if a console would be technologically inferior than a PC in 5 years, they're inferior in 5 months.

Face it, I think this is one of the times where I win and you lose! [sup]*biotch!*[/sup], so HA! I win!

And that's assuming there is a Gen 8 for Sony. Not really concerning sales and such, but questions about a console successor has yielded mixe3d answers from Sony, some of them even saying they aren't sure about a PS4 at all.

But I think they will probably bring a successor, I do.

It is what you do with it, and it has always been like that, but it hasn't stopped the average lifespan of a console before a successor comes to be around 6 years before a successor is released along side it. I can see a successor to the Wii coming out around 2012, if the tech varies enough, there will be enough support for both consoles, but I see a Nintendo successor to be quite likely around 2012-2013. The PS3 could have waited a few years considering GoW II came out and was one of the best titles on the system, but it would have given Microsoft even more of a head start.

Bah, Sony's too stuborn to all of a sudden cut the Playstation brand, we should all know that by now :p

I would predict that the most recent console, a toss up between Microsoft and Nintendo, would come out around 2012 or 2013 at the latest. With the PS4, I'd think it'd be much more likely for it to come around 2014 or 2016 at the latest. Sony seem very dedicated to the 10+ year plan for the PS3 which is why they're taking a steady approach to it.

Completely dependent on this generation. They can want to bring out another console, but if it's going to fuck them over financially then it obviously won't happen.

PS2 had a 10 year plan. Successor still came out for it beforehand though, even if it is still going. I could see it lasting ten though, why not. If they don't have plans to bring out a successor then longer, but if they do, I don't think they will release the console on the ninth or tenth year. Microsoft won't be bringing out a successor any time now I think, there's no reason why it can't last a decade. so Microsoft, probably 2014-2015 methinks.

Good strategy, Sony.
It works for MS and their Live service. They delay patches, DLC, and other things if you're a Silver member, then cram the Gold membership down your throat

*Shrug* Beggers can't be choosers. If you want premium service, then you should expect to pay a premium fee. The difference with "Home" is that the PS3 already has an online service that works just fine without needing Home. So if they start forcing gamers to use Home in order to play games in the future, then it seriously is just cramming it down their throats, because it's not like there's some premium service involved that you're paying for, it's just games requiring Home for the sake of having games require Home because Sony wants you to use the program.

(( The sick thing would be if you had to pay for a premium service to NOT have to use Home, but I should shut my mouth lest a Sony rep be reading this topic. ))

Well since this topic hasn't been touched for some time. I'm going to dig it up from the grave like the dirty/powerful necromancer that I am. I suppose since this is my first post I should introduce myself.

Hi! Real names Jake and I was one of those people who swore I would never be so nerdy as to join an internet forum but well here I am. I tried joining the PSXextreme forums a few times but for some reason it never worked and I realized joining a bunch of people who are going to agree with me on everything would be pointless so here I am. I found out about the escapist through a fateful stumble press to one of yahtzee's videos, if anyone cares.

So, onto my post. I like many PS3 users was very excited when Home became an open beta. But (like many PS3 owners) the joy quickly worn off when here simply wasn't much to do. The interactivity was low so I only stopped by every once in a while. I think the problem was what Sony always does with things, they tend to promise high and deliver lower. Not terribly low but not as much as they said in press releases.

But here we are, six months later and since my roomate ruined inFamous for me I've been wanting to play something but nothing too serious (maybe I have ADD). So I log into Home and low and behold I see MANY new spaces! EA has 5 now, one for inFamous, Resistance 2, Namco, Capcom, Buzz, ect. There are alot of them, meaning there are alot of things to do. Games to play, videos to watch, all great or at least good and all VERY welcome.

So since they have solved, or at least abated the problem "theres nothing to do in Home", everything should be good as gold right? No. The problem with Home is ironically, the community. Now before anyone gets on my tits about the PS3 community and claim this as a fanboy rant or whatever allow me to spew the bog-standard defense statement.

I own a PS3 ONLY, nothing against X-box but the games don't interest me as much (save Gears of War, Fable, and Mass Effect especially (you lucky bastards)). My PSN is GhosT8585 and if your not a prick, I would love to be your friend. There, better? Anyways.

From what I have experienced the past week is that 98% of Home users are 12 to 18 year old pervs or skanks (if they're even realy girls) and they really take the fun out of Home. For a service that is suppost to be about community cohesion and commnication, it does pretty much the opposite, for me anyways. Going back to my defence statement, my experience with XBL leads me to belive that it would be just as bad with that crowd if not worse.

It took me about 4 days to find some people who we're NOT annoying and since then it's been better but there are alot of things Sony needs to make happen to make Home as great as they sold it to be. Like-

-Trophy Rooms: I like getting trophies, and the room they showed before the open beta looked awesome....so where is it? It can't be THAT hard.

-Streaming Videos and Music in personal spaces: This would understandably be harder to do, but you said we could do it. Here is a good general rule Sony. Don't tell us about a feature unless you can also tell us when it will be available. If you're not sure, don't tell us about it. We just now got the ability to hang pictures from our hard drive in the spaces for others to see, and it works fine. I got to show the decent people I met pictures of my family and myself in my personal space, and its VERY welcome, so maybe the music will come next, who knows.

-Game Launching: For EVERY game. Killzone 2 especially. You would figure all the work they put into killzone.com and that KZ2 has a hearty multiplayer aspect this would be a given, but no such luck. Make a game space like Warhark has and add game-launching already! If they don't do that for MAG I will brown my boxers.

So there we go, while Home is better, it still needs work. But since its only been six months for a free service, I would say they have done a good job. The community is something Sony can't honestly control. But some of the key selling points need to be implemented soon, VERY soon. Wow, this turned out to be a very long post. But if you guys read it, I'll know I joined the right forum. Thank you for your time.

Interesting this topic should return.
Recently, I was on my girlfriends account and checked into HOME to see if anything was happening, when I learned something interesting.

HOME is full of the most desperate men in the world. I had been logged in no less that 5 minutes before every male in the bowling area tried to hit on my female avatar.

So I'm going to suggest that Sony make HOME more female friendly (think along the lines of Japans seperate train carriages) so that they can boost their numbers :)
