What is up with Sony? I mean, they released the PS3 Slim, and it's $300 right now, it's 120 GB, and it has a reduction of fan noise. And the other PS3, the original 80 GB, is also $300, and the clear winner is the Slim. What's the point of making them both 300?
And...why is Sony making the new PSP GO strictly for download content only? It's just...weird (no offense to any of you who like the idea). I prefer having both downloadable and UMD compatible only because all those games that are in stores for the PSP are going to be a waste. Maybe it's a master plan they're hiding...who knows.

as far as i know they are discontinuing the production of the ps3 phat, and so right now they are just pricing it to sell out all the units already in stock... they are still taking a loss on each unit sold, so if they lower the price on the ps3 phat any more they wont be able to make up the losses in software sales.. something like that i guess

I belive the 80GB has BC while the slim doesn't.
The REALLY old ones do, they took it out of the newer ones, I guess they were low on their douche bag quota that month.

And that is why I said "I think". Thanks for the corection, but my mind was changed about that issue when I saw the latest Sessler's Soapbox.

Sony can be baffling in general.

I don't really know what they're doing. Download-only content for the PSPgo is an interesting prospect, as it would keep the owner from having to carry around UMDs all the time, but not having a disc or insert of some sort does seem odd. It's a little like an MP3 player, I guess: you download your entertainment to it, and it's ready for travel.

IDK...SOme ppl will still like the old ps3 big box. For BC and harddrive upgrades, more usb... I dunno if u can upgrade the slim or not. I'd guess yes. And for the psp go. i mean it's really not needed. But personally i think its cool to have a DLC handheld. I HATED umd's bulky stupid and just an ugly of a format. I Still won't buy one but its a some sort of step forward in the world of handhelds.

First of all, thanks for the link< I very much enjoyed it. Although I don't agree. For instance, right now almost every new generation game can go fuck themselves as I am far too busy playing Persona (just finished 3 and What. The. Fuck.). His argument is based purely on the chance that games will be brought back in down loadable content or just completely re-vamped. Which may be true for about 1% of games but there's 99% of games that wont be.
Its not as if it would be hard to do, it was actually done but Sony took it out, which means they weren't improving their product but actually worsening it. Which is a flabbergasting idea imo.

Ehh, I'm holding back on the PSPgo for a single month. In that time, word should be out on whether or not we can trade our UMDs in for 'virtual' versions of the games to put on your PSPgo's.

Why a month, exactly? Because I have a lovely November Birthday. Right on Turkey Day. I have one of the best damned birthdays ever, allowing me many free goodies. PSPgo will just be one of them.(Mostly because every other damn game I've been looking forward to has been pushed back to 2010 T_T )

I find all corporate entities confusing, but I also find people confusing for expecting their corporate gods to bend to their every whim, and at the same time expect they will solve everyone's problems.

Sony's a corporation like any other. You'll find a similar amount of people whining about how the New Lego from Lego Corp is killing Lego with tie-ins, or how 4th Edition D&D is killing Dungeons and Dragons, or how Magic the Gathering's latest rule set will bring about the apocalypse or something. If a corporation doesn't make all the products you like, just buy the products you like and want to use to improve your gaming life and if they don't make other stuff you like, look elsewhere. This applies to Sony, Microsoft AND Nintendo,

Yeah I do see were your coming from, and it is pretty much a luck of the draw deal and I don't see PS2 games coming to PSN anytime soon. And thinking a little more on the topic it is a nucance haveing to deal with maniging the memory of the PS3 with DL games vs. having a disc that you just pop in.

if you have a ps3, just upgrade with a laptop hard-drive that has more space than what is in the PS3 now.

http://www.gamespot.com/features/6176090/index.html
or just pay bestbuy's geek squad to do it.
you can 500 GB 2.5 SATA hard drive costs around $100. Or if your a fanatic you would probably buy one of those 1TB. An 120 GB drive will cost you like $80. You can either do it yourself and save money or buy the next great thing by sony!

the psp go was designed solely b/c of the apple iphone. That thing got thousands of downloadable applications. Sony is trying to evolve their little handheld. They are trying to save money on their loss on the PS3 but they probably shouldn't have made it easy for their customers to swap out hard drives.

The wish of many an original poster on this site. Seldom granted.

Oh and as to the question at hand, I'm confused too. I'm also not forking out $300 for either the "fat" nor the "slim" version of the PS3. I like my Sony PS One and PS2 just fine, but can't bring myself to pull the trigger on getting a PS3.

Nope none of the current PS3's are BC. I guess it's to offer people a choice in which model they want. There is no real difference between the 2, the fan reduction noise is not even that noticeable.

It's obvious that they're trying to get rid of 'old' stock.
That's all it it is.

Also, the backwards compatibility thing?

I don't care, unless it actually works. The Wii's backwards compatability is near-flawless.
And even then, the only reason I care about it is because I never owned a Gamecube.

If I did, there's every chance I'd just use the gamecube to play those games.

The video someone linked to?

The problem with being able to download old games is that you rarely get the games you want to download (and end up having to resort to illegal methods 80% of the time to stand any chance of getting them)
or, you probably still own a copy, or perhaps have played it so often that you no longer care...

I still own a huge load of N64 games, and a console.
Do I care that I can download them? No. Because it's often easier and more effective to go and buy a second-hand cartridge.

I could easily get a PS2 right now, if I cared to. (and despite really disliking the controllers, and never having wanted any playstation console to date, it's starting to get tempting to get a PS2, if only for Final Fantasy.)

But yeah.

To get back to where this started, the 2 PS3 models being the same price is as simple as the fact that they're trying to phase out the older model altogether.
