Sony Issues Warning Over Exploding Counterfeit Controllers

Is that PS3 controller genuine? It might be a good idea to check, as it could be potentially disastrous if it's not.

It's one thing to buy some third party console accessory and have it not work properly, but it's quite another to have one catch fire or explode in your hand, especially if you didn't know that it wasn't the genuine article.

Sony has put out a consumer alert [http://us.playstation.com/news/consumeralerts/] saying that consumers should be on the lookout for counterfeit controllers that look almost identical to official PS3 wireless controllers. It warns consumers to be careful when purchasing accessories from "uncertain sources," as they may be unreliable and in some cases even dangerous. It adds that only official PS3 wireless controllers are supported by Sony, and that future updates may render third party peripherals inoperable.

It's probably worth pointing out that the alert doesn't say that the counterfeit controllers definitely will catch fire or explode, just that they could, and honestly, the controller is probably much more likely to just stop working than it is to detonate. It seems like there's a teensy bit of spin on this statement, although the idea that authentic Sony accessories are the most reliable in the long run is probably true.

Does this mean sometime in the near future we're going to be seeing videos on youtube where people's controllers randomly explode? I'd watch that....provided no one was really hurt >.>

This whole thing seems less like a warning to consumers, and more like an excuse to legally introduce anti competitive practices. Remember the Microsoft memory card fiasco?

Didn't Microsoft try something like that? With external hard drives and thumb drives? Didn't it cause a massive shitstorm?

EDIT: Bloody hell, been ninja'd.

And any doubt anybody ever had that Sony was not like every other business out there, including Microsoft, should be gone now. If it's not, let me introduce you to a little term I call 'Profit Margin'...

Combine the exploding controllers with the potential third party lockout.

Sony is planning to use an update to make third party controllers explode!

Considering every PS3 controller comes with an internal rechargeable battery, it's possible that a poorly designed knockoff could be dangerous.

I have a Sony recharge station for AA batteries that says:
WARNING! Attempting to charge non-SONY batteries may cause them to LEAK or EXPLODE
Why are third party products [sub]supposedly [/sub]exploding whenever they come in contact with a Sony product?

Yeah. It's one thing to warn, but removing compatability ompletely? Dick move, likely followed by a few hefty lawsuits.

Good thing I've only got the one that came with my PS3...

Also I'd say that controllers are more likley to fly out the window/into a wall than combust... Especially if they are being used to play MW2.
