The ball changes colors. I remember that much, because the thing turned green when a guy picked up a green thing in the demo. So it's not really fixed depending on player number.

I only saw it because I was watching the event on a big TV and was paying close attention to how his hands were moving at the time

Odds are that it's probably going to stick to only a few basic colors though, so I'm pretty sure that the colored light will probably get stuck with player delegation, as you said. Who knows though, maybe someone will find a way to work the color light into a gameplay mechanic... possibly a visual cue for a radar mechanic or something?
