Sony has filed patents for an interactive doll. The designs it seems are inspired from a product Microsoft tried unsuccessfully to launch in the late 90's

The Doll itself has multiple sensor points and connects wirelessly.

This may well have some potential and interesting applications, although it seems inevitable that if it does see the light of mass production it will only be a matter of time that it will be re purposed for other means.

Should Sony bother pursuing this technology? or would it be a failed endeavor much like the Actimates that inspired it?

Well there might be a place for it. Obviously in its current form and nature as a doll it would lend itself to animatronics. It could make for an interesting interactive toy for extremely young children. Given its tie in with a console its likely parents could also use it to program it with certain lesson types of interaction to help teach their child.

Its possible it could also be used in certain psychological treatments dependant on the complexity of the facial structure and gesturing of animatronics for conditions like Aspergers etc.

As for adults, that might be a little more difficult to find a good use for (outside of the obviously more perverted one that Sony is NOT going to pursue.)

Holy hell does that diagram look creepy. Commercially I don't see it doing overly well, but there may yet be some applications for these kinds of peripherals.

I have to say that this was not what I was expecting when I clicked on "Sony patents interactive doll."

I see no use for this whatsoever, unless it's a sex doll, then it will be sold out in two seconds flat.
A lot of this.
I for one, would pre-order one of these sex toys. I'll deal with awkward questions with my significant other later.
EDIT: Fixed grammar. I'm sure there's still some grammar mistake somewhere, but I got the most obvious one.

Someone will stick some boobs on that in about 3 minutes after release.

Hell, look what happened with Kinect.

*shudders* Too much jiggle physics....
