I'm rather disappointed in having games being cached to the hard drive: makes me wonder why I should even bother owning a console in the first place. Although they aren't entirely specific as to how far the caching of the game discs go (is it the entire disc? Couldn't tell), if it takes the entire disc onto the hard drive then it isn't much more than a PC without a monitor. Why wouldn't I stick with Steam, grab a PS4 controller, and play all my games -- with better graphics -- there than on the PS4 or even the Xbox One? That's what really separated out the console and the PC for me: PCs required a lot more space and consoles had a (relatively) short install and update period.

Probably just a step in the new all digital generation. Sigh, I'm not ready for my console to do that! :/

As for MP3s, CDs, and media servers...meh. Kinda care about the media server but not enough to make a fuss about it. Curious about external storage though.

So the sharing button doesn't allow me to take pics and videos for myself to keep on my HD?
Disappointing.

The share button is without a doubt the most atrophied feature ever implemented on any console. It's too restrictive to be of any use to LPers or anyone else who produces content for the web; essentially it's just a glorified form of advertising via Facebook, one that puts Sony on the level of Zynga by encouraging you to spam your friends about your achievements that no one cares about.

Glad they're doing this before the console's actually released rather than potentially leaving nasty shocks for people who pre ordered. That said I did think there was more disappointing news than exciting news here.

Pros:

What comes in the PS4 box at launch?

You?ll get a PS4 system with a 500GB hard drive, a DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller, a micro-USB cable for charging the DUALSHOCK 4 controller, a Mono-headset for voice chat, a power cable (1.5m), and an HDMI cable (2.0m).
Good to see the headset included as standard and that Sony are finally willing to spend the extra few pennies on including an HDMI cable, not sure why it's taken this long really.

Does PS4 require an external ?power brick??

PS4 is designed with an internal power supply, so it does not have an external ?power brick.?
Convenient if nothing else, those blocks can be a huge pain in the ass space-wise.

Can PS4 and PS3 users play together online, cross-platform?

The functionality is technically possible and some developers may choose to support it for their titles.
This is promising, I hope this is actually made use of, especially for cross platform launch games. It'd be great to play as part of a huge pool of players regardless of whether I'm using PS3 or the PS4

Will any PS4 titles use an Online Pass?

First-party titles on PS4 (titles developed by Sony Computer Entertainment) will not use an Online Pass program. When it comes to third-party titles, PlayStation won?t dictate the strategy of publishers concerning Online Pass programs. However, most third parties have phased out the use of Online Pass systems, so they?re unlikely to appear on PS4.
Not neccessarily a good thing about the console itself but I'm glad online passes are dying out.

Are users able to record, distribute or stream any gameplay video?

No. Users may not be able to record certain areas within the game. Developers can select the area of restriction, and what will be restricted will depend on game titles. In these cases, recording will be temporarily suspended during the scene.
This could be good or bad depending on how its used. If, for example, developers use this feature to prevent people from sharing spoilers from their latest release all over Facebook for the first month or so post release then this would definitely be good. If on the other hand developers use this feature to prevent people sharing footage of glitches and flaws with games (effectively censoring them from sharing valid issues) then it's not such an exciting feature.

Cons:

When playing disc-based games on PS4, do I need to install data to the hard drive?

Yes, all PS4 Blu-ray Disc games must be cached to the hard drive to ensure a smooth gaming experience. However, certain titles may not require you to wait for the game data to be fully cached before starting gameplay. In order to start playing disc-based games, users will need to insert the game disc into PS4 just like on the PS3 system.
Why?! It was a running joke with the PS3 that you had to sit around twiddling your thumbs for a good long while before you could play certain games specifically for this feature (to give an example I had to wait about an hour for Rage to carry out its mandatory installation). Surely it would be better to make this optional like a lot of games did (e.g. Gran Turismo 5) so that a player can see if the loading times really are hefty enough to warrant installing the whole thing (and whether they like the game enough to bother for that matter). Unless the install times have been hugely reduced then this is surely going to be a huge nuisance, especially with the size increase in game files for the next gen.

If I rent a game disc, and then decide I want to buy it digitally, can I use the mandatory install to avoid downloading it and just activate my license?

No, in this example you would have to delete the disc install data and fully install the digital version of the game.
Following the previous point this just seems outright inconvenient, would it have been so difficlt to at least work the install in to reduce the download time?

Can I listen to audio CDs using PS4?

No, PS4 does not support audio CDs.
Will I be able to play MP3s on PS4?

No.
I know the primary focus of the console should be games but this just seems utterly stupid. I don't believe for a second that it would have been a big technical challenge to at least include the ability to play mp3s, this sounds like yet another attempt to trick people into buying Music Unlimited rather than actually make the service more appealing.

Can I play my PS3 games on my PS4 system?

No, PS4 does not feature backward compatibility for PS3, PS2, or PSone games.
It's hardly new information but this still irritates me hugely, even the PS3 was able to play PS1 games. Hell they could even stick a PS2 slim onto the top of the console with a second disk drive with basically no effort, why keep pretending every previous generation doesn't exist as soon as a new console comes out?

How many DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controllers can I connect to my PS4 at one time?

PS4 supports up to four DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controllers at one time.
The PS3 was able to support 7 controllers; yet another step backwards.

Can users switch the light bar off and on?

No. The light bar also serves as an indication of whether the DUALSHOCK 4 controller is turned on. Across different games, the color and brightness of the light bar on the DUALSHOCK 4 controller can be adjusted by game developers, but it cannot be completely switched off.
Because it'll be really immersive seeing a bright blue bar reflected in the TV screen constantly... I think this will prove an issue for horror games in particular with their dark environments and reliance on tension, it can only be distracting having a little colour changing light under your nose the entire time.

Can I add voiceover to my Shared video?

You can?t add voiceovers to a shared video clip, but you can speak in real time when streaming live video.
I'm curious about this from a copyright perspective. Nintendo have started merrily pulling down any video using their games, even when there is original added value in these videos (e.g. let's plays). What's to stop developers/ producers deciding they don't want their game footage being shared and this feature becoming obsolete?

Sufficit to say I'll not be getting the first iteration of the PS4. Some of the issues are forgivable but some of them just seem so basic and easily fixed that it's actually quite irritating to see them present in what should be cutting edge technology.

Again, it's not required. I realize it's quibbling because most people will want it, and a lot of the internet functionality won't work without it and you can't play movies without it. But being able to get your game console home, put a game in it, turn it on, and play the game should be the minimum acceptable standard for any console. Even the Wii U managed that.
Yes because paying $400 hundred dollars for the BARE BASICS of being able to put "disc in game unit" and have it play......is what we should be grateful for. Absolutely, we should all bow down and give thanks to our Sony Overloards for the this privilege.

And Nintendo DID do that......20 years ago, at the price of a hundred bucks. So, what's Sony's excuse?

Why do you mean, it can't share videos on YouTube? That's just utterly bizarre to me, considering it's the main video sharing website out there and a key usage for Let's Players.

The cross-platform gaming sounds good though.

What possible reason could they have to not include DLNA streaming? It's not that critical an issue for me to have as I have other boxen that support it I can connect to my TV (heh, including the PS3), but it seems rather weird not to include support for it at all.

Woah, you're really making a mountain out of a molehill, aren't you?

Yeah, you're paying $400 bucks for "bare basics". Are you paying extra for anything in the patch? No?

I think people can handle "only" being able to play games on it until the patch downloads or until the internet comes back on. Yeah, I think it's crappy too, yes I agree it's pretty pathetic how simple things such as DVD playback needs a patch, but it's not a big deal, or even a permanent issue.

I mean, come on, "we should all bow down and give thanks to our Sony Overlords"? Oh boo hoo, you need to wait a while before you can use your PS4 to watch Iron Man 3 and find something else to do with your time... Like using it to play games. I'm sure it's going to ruin the entire PS4 experience for you (yes, I used that PR phrase).

And no, I'm not a PS4 fanboy and I have very little intention of getting one.

There's this little bit in the blog.

Can I play my PS3 games on my PS4 system?

No, PS4 does not feature backward compatibility for PS3, PS2, or PSone games.
On top of not having any killer apps for launch, it's going to be -completely- incompatible with all previous generations. Fuck this shit.

PS1, quite possibly, as it's done solely through emulation of the software. PS2 is trickier because of the emotion engine chip, which was phased out in later versions of the PS3, although some clever custom firmware modders have gotten them to run on non-backwards compatible PS3's by converting them into PS2 classics, much like you could convert PS1 titles to be played on PSP. PS3 on PS4 just isn't possible, due to the structure of the cell architecture, and PS4 running a x86 architecture.

EDIT: I stand corrected on the PSone bit. But really, the only way you're playing previous generations of games on PS4, is by purchasing downloadable classics from the PSN, or streaming if that option is available.

That's just the sad state of things now. I know it's pathetic and I weep for both the Wii U and the PS 4 shipping with nothing working but this, but then the XB1 doesn't even manage that level of functionality out of the box.

Well, I guess it looks like there's absolutely no reason whatsoever for me to spend money on buying a PS4 for a while yet, then.

I wonder how long it'll be until they release a game that makes the PS4 worth buying it for... it'll have to be a really good game to justify spending $500 or so to play it.

No external hard drive support is the only thing that I don't like. I don't care about the other features. Maybe it will be added later. Didn't the same thing happen with the PS3?

And THAT is the reason one should never buy a console at launch, much less pre-order. The amount of restrictions and incomplete features that they just revealed and promise to patch up later on is staggering. One year from now, the PS3 will be a different beast, but right now, it feels rather basic.

Then again, I am glad Sony was, at least, honest and transparent about the capabilities of the new console. In similar conditions, Nintendo or Microsoft would just let it slide and leave users discover them after the purchase.

Happily, both the PS4 and Xbox One are so close to the PC platform that extremely efficient emulation is possible using a hypervisor, provided a GCN-based AMD graphics card is installed. The same things that make them easy to program make them easy to emulate.

I wouldn't be at all shocked to see your PC (or Steam Machine) able to play these games down the line. I think each of the consoles, with custom firmware, would be able to emulate the other, too (although performance will vary).

Not surprised about this. They're focusing exclusively on games and what they've announced. It's a new codebase so no existing features on PS3 would carry over. It's technically capable of PS1 emulation, and maybe PS2 at a stretch, but they never announced any backward compatibility for it, save via streaming/"the cloud", and they would have to rewrite a new emulator basically from scratch to support it, so I'm not surprised to see it unavailable in official firmware.
