I just bought a 12 Gig PS3 and upgraded it with a 320GB hard drive my dad had lying around, all for just under 170 euros. But now I think I maybe should have waited until the PS4 release for the inevitable drop in second hand prices...
Depends how much you were itching to play the games. I've you're going to get a few more months fun out of it, maybe it justifies the purchase.
Well I have been playing the Last of Us and thoroughly enjoying it, so yeah I guess it really was worth it. :)

The ps3 actually has a surprisingly good list of exclusives. Journey, Uncharted, InFamous, Last of Us, God of War, Heavy Rain, Demon's Souls, Little Big Planet, Ni No Kuni, Tokyo Jungle and a few others (3D Dot Game Heroes, Killzone, Yakusa 4, MGS 4, Rachet and Clank). The 360 by contrast has much fewer heavy hitting exclusives but the few they had are massively popular (Halo, Gears of War... dead rising?).

If I were a kid again and could only afford one system, it'd be the PS every time. Microsoft should be able to produce better exclusives. I think they're actually supposed to have one of the largest software studio collections in the world. But most of them just aren't producing those quality AAA titles that I remember a week after playing. As you stated, Last of Us was great and I still think about it. That was done by Naughty Dog which is actually a single Sony owned Studio. Hopefully the XBO will get with it with legitimate first party support this time around that isn't just kinect stuff.

So the ps3 is still an excellent buy at this stage with a significant backlog.

I only just traded in my slim PS2 in Christmas '11 for a new PS3, so I'm glad they usually keep up support for their older systems for so long, otherwise we wouldn't get such great late cycle games like Persona 4. I will get a PS4 next year, though, 'cuz of Transistor, Murdered: Soul Suspect, inFamous: Second Son and The Order:1886 etc. Also, really hoping they do release The Last Guardian on either PS3 or PS4 sometime soon, otherwise Shu's recent news that it is being re-engineered will just be getting my hopes up.

I've been wondering about this as well. With Shu's statement in mind I was surprised that this game wasn't announced or even mentioned by Sony as a year-one title. But supposedly there's still several unknown titles in-line for the system so I'm hoping this is one we'll see soon.

It's good to know PS3 won't be dropped like a hot potato once PS4 jumps on the scene. You have to expect some kind of transition from the old into the new. But doesn't mean you won't be able to play those games again. Isn't Sony working on a streaming service to import the PS3 games to the new gen? Seems abit more work than just getting the backward compatibility we all want. Still I'm happy with my system, and even happier it's not getting tossed to the side just because the new shiny is here. There will be price drops and sales of course, a prime time for those that wanted to get into PS3 gaming.

When they stop supporting the PS3, that will be the end of my console gaming. I can't afford to have an up to date PC and a new console. I'll just keep my endlessly backwards compatible system up to date.

If they plan on supporting the PS3 well into the life of the PS4, then I expect it to eat at the PS4 sales.

Still, it's nice to know that everyone with a PS3 will keep getting brand new games.

$60 for ps3 software doesn't look any different than $60 for ps4 software from Sony's perspective. They made a LOT of money on the ps2 while the ps3 was busy floundering.

While product cannibalism is certainly probable, the risk of not selling any games to the nearly 90 million ps3 owners constitutes a significant forfeiture of revenue while the ps4 is getting up in numbers. People will start moving over as fewer and fewer games get ps3 ports. Which, considering the difficulty of developing for the ps3 is likely to be sooner rather than later.
