So, you'll need your own pair if you just want to watch other people play? That's really inconvenient (read: good business).
well apparently for Nintendo's 3DS if you try to watch someone play it hurts your head so...

An official press release from sony:

"QQ"

The home theater setup is stupid, they didnt ditch the glasses of movie theater polarized 3d but instead opted for electronicly shuttered glasses that sync to refresh rate for the same 3d experience. The theater glasses are dirt cheap, but the shuttered glasses are a hot $150 dollars.

This isn't a real innovation. It's the expensive alternative to something better. 3d is certainl the next media milestone but This particular implementation sucks because it's so clumsy. A pair of overteched glasses for each viewer. Might be fine if they were cheap, like thier no batteries required alternative. The same tech that goes into the 3DS glasses free 3d is also applicable to home theater but it's not ready yet on that scale. It's called autostereoscopic display and a 42' tv with such technology has alot of problems still. Cost, and a narrow viewing angle are the main problems. I'll wait til that tech matures instead of blowing 3 grand + 4x150 dollars on the next beta tape.

Glasses-free 3D is the only good 3D. In that point I must add-- wait, what? Sony and Nintendo working together?? Could it be?

I remind you that this is the company that once bashed the Wii's motion control saying "we're certainly not interested in gimmicks" (promoting the motion controlled Six Axis at the same press conference I might add) and is now coming out with a Wiimote with a ball on the end boasting that it controls better than other motion controls.
