After claiming that Sony?s lawsuit against George Hotz et al was an attack on free speech, hacking collective Anonymous declared war on Sony. Hoping to seek revenge on the company, Anonymous warned that Sony would soon suffer for their actions. Now, Sony.com and PlayStation.com has fallen to the hackers, with more sites promised to follow.

Speaking on a IRC chat a group of Anonymous are currently attacking several Sony sites. At the moment both Sony.com and PlayStation.com (including the PlayStation Store over PC) are down, presumably due to a DDoS attack ? a distributed denial-of-service attack. People involved in the attack, called ?OpSony? are asking that hackers ?crash all server of sony please?. (Update - Some people can connect to Sony.com, but the site is extremely slow).

Update 2: The PSN is also experiencing intermittent connection issues for numerous gamers. (Sony have said that the ?PSN currently undergoing sporadic maintenance. Access to the PSN may be interrupted throughout the day. We apologize for any inconvenience.?)

In a document detailing some members plans for the attack, other sites targeted include sonypictures.co.uk and sony-europe.com, which are currently up.

Several members have also stated that the ?Operation isnt over until sony do a press release?.

Update 3: Anonymous have released a video

Sony has yet to comment on the attacks. PlayStation LifeStyle will keep you updated as the situation develops.

It was bound to happen, and I support Anonymous in their cause. I don't exactly approve of their actions but if this it what it takes to show Sony that they can't do what they have been doing without consequences, than so be it.

Anon needs to just stop. What Sony is doing is childish, and what Hotz did was just a dick move that clearly violated any gaming companies rules. Still, Sony is in the right, cause they're running a business, and protecting their assets. Its sad to see that you cant even run a business nowadays.

I don't get this whole Anonymous deal. If Anonymous is not an organized group than how do they go about doing organized attacks?

Yes brilliant move anon. To take petty vengeance on the few people that were actually involved with the law suite you inconvenience the customers who are trying to use Sony's services, and make the jobs of the people who are in charge of the websites a living hell. Nice job anon, nice job.

I'm with you, they're just so dramatic.

I love the part of the video that said, these attacks will continue until we are completely satisfied.

Ahem.

OT: No opinion on this. I normally root for Anonymous, and while I hate how Sony is suing Geohot, I think Anonymous declaring war on them is kind of unprovoked.

Support freedom of speech and information by controlling what people do and push your own agenda.

Nope, there appears to be nothing weird about that...

Anyways, while I'm always one to point out how much control the corporations have and such. I'm actually with Sony on this one. You hack your PS3 and then release the shit online for people to use, somehow thinking it's in your rights and they won't care? They have no right to do that.

If he hacked it and kept it to himself, then that's another story.

They sound like a bunch of tools to me. I'm sure they now more about computers than I would ever want but what they are doing just seems childish. I think Sony has enough money and minds to fight them off. If my PSN goes kaput then I might just have to do some digging and find those lovely people and get Mideval on them.
One of the biggest security companies, the FBI, and Bank of America couldn't beat them.
I did not know that.
Look up HBGary. Basically, Anon ruined a company, humiliated the FBI and showed that Bank of America was planning on setting up liberal journalists to discredit them, all in one or two months.
Didn't they get into HBGary by basically sending a email claiming to be the CEO asking for his username and password?

The FBI thing is ongoing atm, I doubt anonymous are stupid enough to hack the FBI.

My only girpe is that... well the sites being offline really don't matter much.
I don't think Sony really cares to be honest.

If they could pull another HBGary on Sony though, I would love to see that.
Sony is one of those companies you just KNOW has a giant closet full of skeletons and dirty secrets.

I have no problem with the Anon hackers... Until they ruined my PSN. I wanted to play the Socom 4 beta yesterday but PSN was down. And I know I am going to want to play it today but I damn well know it will be offline. How is ruining regular gamers fun going to help their cause? It's only going to make people hate them. More people got a PS3 to play games online then they did to jail-break it and add linux or whatever. Way to screw over the majority of people who want to have fun just to appease the small group of people. It's pretty sad really.

Yeah, because defending your buisness and upholding the law is an attack on free speech. Moron... hope this gets resolved quickly, I wanted to get a PS1 game today.
Ok, it only just clicked... I don't have to search for second hand copies of Spyro and Medieval. I can buy them on PSN... Now I need a PS3. Thankyou kind sir (madam?) for your fortunate remark.
OT: Oh, right, Sony have taken questionable steps in this lawsuit business, Geohot shouldn't have published the root key (modding is fine until you openly enable software piracy) they're both acting like dicks, but Geohot started it so I'm actually rooting for Sony in this one. Still, Anonymous "operations" are fun to watch, so yay.
