I'm actually a bit more intruiged by the gun. If we can use the ink splatter as a sticker on the receptor, clone it and apply it to the enemies, it could cut down several tonnes on the effort people have to put in to making a side scrolling shooter.

And apparently, among the objects in question are a REX, a RAY, and a GEKKO

I think the gun looks like the needle the little sisters use to drain Adam. Am I the only one?
