I could see that being the case, but horse-armor-on-a-DVD probably has a very limited market.
"Horse Armor"

The first downloadable content available for the Xbox 360 game Oblivion. Upon its release, there was an uproar in the gaming community due to its nearly useless feature set and and relatively high price tag ($2.50 US). Since then, the term horse armor has been used to describe video game features that are useless or overpriced. [http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=horse%20armor]

YES AT LEAST SOMEONE WITH COMMON SENSE HURRAY !!!

Even thought i don't agree all that he says, at least there will be no more that "taking clients for idiots" policy!

i think he was thinking of "Expansions" more than that stupid DLC idea...

DLC that they develop alongside the game - no fucking way.

DLC developed after the main game development has been fully completed - sure.

Or is he saying that whenever you release DLC, it should come in physical form as well, like what Rockstar did with its GTA4 expansions? I could see that being the case, but horse-armor-on-a-DVD probably has a very limited market.
Horse Armour is on a DVD, the Knights of the Nine DLC collection [http://www.amazon.co.uk/Oblivion-Knights-Nine-PC-DVD/dp/B000JXPKN0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1274481232&sr=8-1]. Imo (& this is probably what he & other industry types have got at) DLC is great, but it should at some point end up in a physical format. I for one have never paid for DLC, & prefer to wait the extra 6 or whatever months it takes for them to compile it all onto one disc & sell at retail.

It's an old idea called an expansion pack, back in the days when you got C&C Red Alert and then its expansions as a seperate 'game' C&C Red Alert: Retaliation, GTA4 just used that idea. [/sarcasm]
To be honest thats the best way, get them all on disc, I dont buy DLC because I dont have a credit card and prefer my products as hard copy.

Yes, that would have been the reference :p

Also, I'm familiar with the concept of expansions, people.

DLC... On the disc...

That's the single stupidest fucking thing I have ever heard.
Dumber than developers not finishing their games and then charging us extra if we want the full product?
My wired internet died a while ago so I couldn't get all the free stuff that came with Space Wizards 2 (Mass effect 2) I deserved Zaeed and the hammerhead as much as anyone else, but noooooooo. A single generation ago developers had to finish their games, and make sure they were bug free. The internet ruins everything.

Well at least someone realises that not everyone has constant access to broadband internet.

If all DLC was worth releasing on a DVD then of course making it accessible to more people is a good idea.

Don't buy the horse armour though; it isn't worth it.

Horse-armor-on-a-DVD isn't really fair. It came bundled with Knights of the Nine and a bunch of the other miscellaneous DLC's at the time. The separate Horse Armor download I can get behind being a pointless waste of money.

Mass Effect and Dragon Age seem to have right ideas concerning DLC, even if they are taking different routes.

i see where he is coming from, but really for most games, they NEED DLC to surpass their expiry date, i mean with games like fallout 3, you can't seriously have all that data crammed into one disk, unless maybe it's a blue-ray disk,

i do agree alot more should be on disks, but getting rid of DLC entirely is a bit stupid.

I'm surprised people are having that much trouble with what he is talking about. He may have not stated it clearly but the intent is there.

He likes the concept of DLC. The concept being the continued support of the games that are out there, whether it be map packs or characters, and story related content. He also likes the idea of enticing the player to hold on to and keep playing the game.

He also likes disc based content as he wants 100% of the user base to have access to all of the content offered for the game.

If it weren't for the fact that the man has a vested interest in optical media and all associated apparatus, I might be inclined to believe he simply wants to ensure each person has the opportunity to purchase a particular piece of content.

I agree that discs are better then DLC and everything on XBL and PSN should be on discs, but like the Fallout 3 dlc was done. In terms of the games, compilation discs on either a genre or developer basis and indie games compiled together. Also DLC should still stay and option because of people who want to save money.

When did people forget how to read on this forum? He has no problem with DLC, but he wants DLC to also be distributed on discs (not at release) as to not alienate potential audience.

I would LOVE horse-armor-on-cd! i wouldn't buy the horse armor, but i would KILL to have that system. I would much rather go to the store and buy the cd with the expansion on it, then have to sign up for yet another account, have my information in yet another database somewhere, have to keep track of yet another login/password, all for some site ill never go to ever again.

I've always prefered a hard copy over DLC. If my HDD goes bad, there goes my games. If I suffer enough failures, then I have to re-purchase my games. Whereas if I have a disk, I need only tend to its physical condition, which I do very well (I still have fully functional NES games from my childhood).

What I think would be interesting would be a catalogue of content that you can request to a disk. Say, go to sonys' website, tell the system you want 5 of their games, two general dlc's, and one dlc expansion pack. Sonys site tells you that's one or two blu-ray or dvd disks, charges you, and you get in in the mail, or from a local retail outlet, like EB games, or whatever. You can still access content from the PSN, of course, since there's no sense back pedaling on current efforts, and suddenly content is made available on disk-based media. :)

My idea may need refining, of course. But it does appeal to me.

Damn straight! Better to not have it at all, but if you must, don't dime-and-quarter people, make it disc-based. Then at least we'll have a physical copy of the product we just bought, so we can't have a sever wipe or developer mistake whisk away our investment.

DLC had better be a fad, because even when I want it I can't get it without putting more and more of my sensitive bank information online, and I don't like having to do that.
