Hmm am I the only one thinking this is some sort of mastermind conspiracy to drive down Sony's stock temporarily, so that someone with some investment capital can buy it up for dirt cheap?

This is obviously going to hurt the brand. But it's highly unlikely sony wont recover.

As I've said before, I think Sony could end this very simply, all it has to do is publically apologize, restore the other OS functionality, and concede that people own the products they pay for. Now I understand why a massive Godzilla-like corperation doesn't want to do those things, and what is at stake, but really that's pretty much what is going to end this.
Am I the only one that is fucking terrified by the realization that people are suggesting that someone should give in to terrorist demands if they're attacked enough?

I was chatting with a friend and telling him about how I was providing my input on this whole ugly thing, and he said to be careful what I said so I wouldn't provoke someone into hacking me. That REALLY frightened me, seeing that we're turning into a culture where anyone with computer knowledge can threaten and intimidate you into not expressing your true opinions.

What the hell is happening to our society?

Sony people are idiots and the hackers are fucking jerks. Both parties suck. Except whichever small part of sony made the PS2. Those guys are still cool.

Wow. Just...wow. I've used Playstation store, but not SonyPictures, so I should be fine this time around...hopefully. Still, I'm not happy with either group on this. Sony was either thinking nobody would try such an obvious trick or they just weren't thinking. Take your pick. Meanwhile, every hacker and their grandma is getting into Sony's mainframes like they were a bunch of prostitutes, thereby watering down any significance of a major corporation like Sony getting hacked and badly inconveniencing the customers time and time again. This is why hackers aren't heroes. The customers they are supposedly supporting are suffering along with the corporation that was hit. It wouldn't be so bad if it was just knocking the sites and functions down for a period of time, but they're also ripping off the personal information stored in the system. It doesn't matter if the hackers themselves aren't going to use the info; if they're going to post it, it means someone is going to use it anyway.

It doesn't help that Sony was asking for it. Being a big-time corporation, and therefore more concerned with their income than the customer, they went out of their way to piss off these people. Shutting down personal customization of PS3 systems and denying service to those people was only what got the boulder rolling; their little war with Geo and the hackers right after was what turned it into an avalanche. Now it's the innocent bystanders that are covered in this @#$% and paying the price now because Sony hasn't upgraded their security since 1986.

One could argue that it's better that such a fatal flaw is known before someone truly malicious attacked the site, and I would agree, but Sony's already in the process of upgrading their security anyway because of the attacks by Anonymous and the splinter groups that make it. This is just kicking them while they're down. Literally! Come on, people! Move on!

Thank God my PS3 hasn't been on since before they made you start paying for PSN.

My lazyness has saved me once again!

Honestly at this point I think I should just use my PS3 as a paper weight its not going to be turned on till infamous 2 comes out anyway and even then odds are good I'm not even going to use the online.

Funny, I was thinking this same thing, since the articles I read about the incident mentioned that Sony stock is down ~27% since the start of the new year. I wish I had some liquid capital to invest in them, since I have faith that no matter the end result of their beefed-up security (or not), Sony will recover.

They're stealing personal information and they are asking for donations? Please tell me no one is stupid enough to fall for that.

Actually your laziness has kept you from realizing that they don't make you pay for PSN, as well as the fact that it was a completely separate division (Sony Pictures) that was hacked.

Agreed. Plain Texts documents? Really? That is absurd and weak. Looks like PlayStation only spent that $170 million fortifying it's HQ, major databases and the PSN.

Sad that these retards have so little foresight though. They lack good leadership of someone who knows how to achieve. Right now they just firing rockets at whatever targets present themselves, and not carefully selecting their targets or methods of proving it. Yeah I foresee this being the final brick for the downfall of Net Neutrality.

Myself and the rest who enjoyed an unrestricted internet like to thank you for screwing up our stuff on the internet.

Criminals with cause are still criminals.
Criminal is a very broad term. With it you could tar the likes of George Washington, Nelson Mandela, Ted Kaczynski, and Jeffrey Dahmer all with the same brush.

In places like the US with increasing bodies of criminal law, there's also a good chance that many citizens subject to those laws are criminals and don't even know it.

My point is that people should be cautious about reading anything more into the term than its' most basic definition.

If SonyPictures is vulnerable for a SQL injection... well there is nothing to say more about Sonys' security. For those who don't agree that Sony doesn't have enough security measures and who are defending Sony regarding their responsibilities towards security, have a good look on this! Because SQL injection is a childs' play, nothing more!

So this is enough evidence how Sony is treating "Customer data security" as an important factor!

Oh for fucks sake, I'll say it again and maybe this will be put to rest. THERE IS NO REASON FOR THE HACKERS TO LIE ABOUT THEIR METHODS!
That comment has already been shown to be bullshit multiple times in this thread. If you read this thread, you will see that most of the comments fall into one of two catagories.

1: "These hackers suck and should go to jail."

2: "Sony sucks, and so does their security."

Since the only stated reason for this attack was to discredit Sony, it would benefit the hackers to claim that it was dirt simple to perform this hack. Let's put this into a different kind of attack. When a couple kids get into a fight in the playground, how often does the winner say "I got some of the crap kicked out of me, but I still won?" It's human nature to try to discredit other people, because doing so brings them down to a lower level. That's exactly what these guys intended to do with Sony. So, their stated intent gives them an extremely good reason to lie about the defenses that Sony mustered.

So, just to reiterate: The comment I quoted above is bullshit. Can we move on, please?
I think you underestimate the amount of knowledge the public has about hacking into websites... If the group wanted to make sure everyone knew this was really simple then they sure as hell aren't doing a good job at it by saying it's SQL Injection, when you take into account the fact that your average joe probably thinks an SQL injection is like hacking into the fucking pentagon. This was not a PR strategy to discredit Sony, it was some hackers claiming responsibility for a hack and that's it.

You give them too much credit by saying they're lying about their methods to make it seem like the attack was easy when your normal pedestrian off the street probably doesn't even know what MySQL is...

Trust, I'm in the same boat with the PSN hack, but I also realize that being online means balancing risk with reward, and I'd rather continue using the capabilities offered by my PS3 than not.

I agree but I never used my PS3 for anything other than exclusives anyway so there was no real reason to use the online and the hack just made it more pointless to me to bother using it. I mostly play Xbox live so I would still use that if it was hacked just because I use it more. But you are right it's all about weighing risk and reward.

Ppl are criminals when they do something that is bad for the entire world and not because

Laws that have been created by humans say its wrong
You cant feel better about youself now that you cant play games aka denial of fun attack

I can even justify murder easily, especially at the current state of earth... If ppl werent stupid enough to get stuck with the idea of "good" such things wouldnt seem so strange

Lesson: dont get effing stuck to thinks that are trivial and meaningless in the long run laik gramar/"good"/sundays as no-work days

p.s. the common sense most humans talk about is the same sense that said the earth is a square...
no, people are criminals when they break a law. Crime does not necessarily have anything to do with morality
