Hi everyone, this is my first post so be gentle.(captcha - "hug me", it knows)
I am due to get a new PC soon with a decent specification(3.3GHz quad core i5, nVidia GTX580, 8GB RAM). Coming from consoles I usually go for shooter and 3rd person action like God of War and Uncharted and so on.
So people what would you recommend to have a go out.

Thanks

TEAM FORTRESS 2
Super Monday Night Combat
I reluctantly say Battlefield Heroes, It's worth a look but has almost completely been turned into a money making machine for EA
Also the DoTa Games like Heroes of Newearth and League of Legends, both worth a look.
Not only is it awesome but it is free :D
There's plenty of nice pc games on steam but a lot of people seem to have a vendetta against them for some reason so it's up to you whether you want to use it or not.

Well, you likely know what the most prominent shooter/action titles are already. They are predominantly cross platform. PC exclusives tend to be a little more esoteric.

Aliens vs Predator 2. Great game even if you're not a huge fan of either of those franchises. The marine campaign was hailed as one of the scariest single player campaigns of its time, think it even got Scariest of the Year in some magazines the year it came out. :3

Pick up Deus Ex. You will not be disappointed.

There's also the Half-Life series.

All of these you can buy on Steam.

Tribes: Ascend is also free and just got out of beta this week, that's the FPS I'm playing the most recently.
League of Legends gets another vote from me, also free!

Both of those are free in a way where you can get everything game changing by just playing, the only things you need to pay for are cosmetic skins that change nothing but your appearance.
You don't feel at a disadvantage either.

Firefall looks really good but I believe it is in closed beta still. Orks Must Die is a blast and so is Saints Row 3. You might be able to pick up Farcry 1 and 2 up in a DD bundle. Crysis 1 is practically mandatory for owners of high end PC hardware.

It's also worth getting some of your old console favorites on PC if they were a multi-platform release. Fallout 3 was best played on PC and I imagine the same goes for Skyrim.

Indie PC games are worth a look too. Minecraft was fun and continues to be thanks to the modding community.

If you like RPG i would say try the Witcher 2, great game, very nice story, also DeusEx (but dont forget to instal the hd texture pack :p )
Multiplayer FPS go Team Fortress 2, it's cool, it's fun, it's FREE, why hesitate?

League of Legends is good but it is hard to get started if you know nothing off the MOBA genre, but it is the easyest to start with.

The Shogun Total war series are very nice RTS

And if you like indie games try The Binding of Isaac, very nice and damn challenging, and the universe is very strange, edgy and wacky.

Yea, following with everyone else the first thing you should do is get Steam, then get TF2. Counter Strike: Source is a must have if you like tactical/modern multiplayer FPS'.

After that get Skyrim, even if you have it on a console. Skyrim will be a good introduction and eye opener on modding and how drastically it can improve and add to an already good game.

Oh also, Amnesia. Don't ask questions about that one, just get it.

its changed a lot, although i finally let my subscription expire as my PC broke and i don't like how i have to pay for my old characters who happen to be a certain class without being a VIP member. although as long as you aren't a controller or mastermind and you don't care about their new end game stuff, you still can go through the old missions and level to 50 with most of the powersets like before.

the OP should get Starcraft II. the lower difficulty settings should be a good intro into RTSs.

If you aren't scared of Origin get Battlefield 3 but make sure you get the Back to Karkand DLC as well. The new expansion for Civ V looks the business, check out Minecraft, Frozen Synapse, Trine 2, To the Moon and Orcs must Die.

Try out World of Tanks. It's a slow paced tank game with a bit of action and a bit of tactics.
It's free to play with a cash shop, which makes progression tedious, but this doesn't negatively affect the fun factor of the battles.

If you are into multiplayer Starcraft II is almost a must. RTS is an old speciality on the PC platform and no one does it better than Blizzard. There is a good campaign too.

Speaking of which, Diablo 3 is on the horizon, a lot of PC players is looking forward to that.

Another good RTS is Company of Heroes.

For something a bit different you could try 'Terarria', a Minecraft styled game with 2D platforming mechanics.

In addition to that I'll also give a thumbs up to some of the games that have already been mentioned. Half-Life series, Team Fortress, Deus Ex:HR, Tribes Ascend.

As a BF3 player I would not recommend it; the game is just too unpolished for the price.
Frozen synapse however, is excellent if you like Turn Based Tactics.

If you like RPGs try out Divinity 2 the Dragon Knight Saga it's actually pretty good. Made by the same people who did Divine Divinity and who are making Dragon Commander which looks awesome. Also give it a bit if the controls feel a bit off. I know that sounds horrible with defending that but there's an event that happens after you go somewhere that makes you move and jump much better. It's not that long in probably less than an hour if you do the main quest alone.

I would say don't buy games again that you have on a console, despite what people here might be saying. Yes mods add something but not enough to spend more money on. That is jut what I think I don't mod games much at all if you do and like it disregard what I said.

Maybe Legends of Grimrock. Tribes is also pretty fun. Also Dragon age. Even if you played it on console it was pretty much designed for PC.
