Before the consoles released, with the pre-release marketing in full swing, the PS4 was repotedly cheaper. Because kinnect.

And yet, everywhere I look, it's more expensive. Every high street shop and retailer I can find, it costs more.

So what gives? Did sony lie?

EDIT: I'm in the Uk by the way.

Are they standalone ps4's or bundle packs? because if they are bundles then it's just the store making an extra cash grab.

A lot of places disregard MSRP when they see supply and demand. PS4 seems to be scarce in some places, so prices hike. On the flip side, there are more than enough Xbones so they get discounted...
Pretty much this. It's similar to what happens when you try to buy a product online and it's in low stock but high demand. The prices will hike based on it. With retailers, they purchase consoles from the manufacturers, and the sell it to try and make that money back. Most of the time they will keep it similar to the price that Sony wants them to, but there are times in which businesses will hike up the prices so that they can make even more money.

Same thing happened with the PS3 when it launched in such low supply, I mean I was seeing them go on eBay for 10k, and similar things happened with that for the Nintendo Wii as well since it was flying off the shelves faster than Nintendo could restock, so stores that had some stock would decide to sell it for a higher price.

Then another thing, is it a bundle that you're seeing? There are many PS4 bundles, one of them comes with 2 Dualshock 4 controllers, and most of the others come with either a game or some other peripheral (the new Playstation camera was one bundle I believe).

On closer inspection it seems to be stores selling PS4's in bundles, and only in bundles. Which is irritating, as for most people a lower price to play the same games is what will sell a console to them.

It's doesn't seem as expensive on my Island (Isle of Man) as it does to the Uk market, if anything Xbones here are more expensive by about £50-65.

Also buying a mootherboard,CPU and a new case is already costing me £420+, that's around the cost of a PS4 here...

Depends on the package and retailers boundaries, I know my local stores will go up to 200% if shit sells good, that is how it usually goes with CoD and FIFA games.

I like how the OP gave us no details. How about the prices you are seeing the PS4 for? Are they bundles and what games are they bundled with? What stores have these prices?

I just checked the UK Amazon and a new unbundled PS4 is 437 pounds whereas a Xbox One is 430 pounds.

According to the official UK playstation website, a PS4 is supposed to cost 350 pounds [http://uk.playstation.com/ps4/]. The Sony website itself is selling a killzone bundle for 385.

The Microsoft RRP is 430 pounds [http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msuk/en_GB/pdp/productID.285169900?icid=home_rot_xbox-one] for the UK

So the answer appears to be that there's less PS4's than there is demand causing the price to shoot up, whereas the Xbox One isn't so wanted. Even though it has Kinect
