Ok, so i'm a drummer. Unfortunately, I don't get too much time to practice 'cause my mum works from home and she can't put up with the noise. So, I want to know if anybody knows a good way to soundproof my room (or just the part of my room where the drums are) that's gonna allow me more time to practice and less headaches for my family?

I'm a bassist, so I know your pain.

A lot of places sell something called acoustic foam, which is basically that black foam on walls at studios, etc. It can be expensive, but you can get the same basic effect with those egg-crate style foam mattress pads. The same thing can be done with thick carpeting or tapestries, and it also helps to put up curtains or something around your kit to act as a sound baffle, even a relatively thin curtain will help cut down noise. I had a corner of the room with some egg-crate foam stuck up on the wall and some thick blankets hanging from the ceiling, and they say it really helped cut down on noise (I wouldn't know, I was on the inside)

The bass drum can be easily reduced in noise by just filling it with something soft like spare towels or bed sheets. Pretty much every drummer I know locally uses that trick, including teachers for lessons.

The rest of the drum kit is a bit more complicated. You can get drum silencer pads, but they can also ruin the feel of the kit in the very brief experience I've had with them.

You can try sound-proofing the room but that can be a lot more expensive. A friend of mine has to play drums in his family's garage because of that very reason.

Acoustic foam or iffn you're cheap; you can buy eggcrate bed foam. Which has a similar pattern and is quite a bit thinner. In high school this is what my twin brother covered the ceiling of our (basement) room with it so he could play drums while I played my bass. We pretty much ruined the ceiling though because we stapled cardboard under the foam. He also put towels in the bass drum to help.

Ya, i've used sheets in my bass drum to muffle the sound. I'll have to hunt down some of that egg carton foam and stick that to my walls and floor, see if that helps. Thanks for all the suggestions and if anything else comes to mind, don't hesitate to post.

Matresses.

Get some decently thick ones and prop them up against the walls. It really does help. Try to get some baffles too, if you can.
