So Valve have finally completed their new engine and ported a game to it, we should be seeing this in action very soon now, opinions on this development?

Personally I REALLY want to see TF2 ported to this, the engine has visibly aged with that game and with that and the promised Competitive Matchmaking system it could be the shot in the arm that TF2 needs.

Source 2 has been officially released through the DOTA 2 Reborn update and we have a good chunk of performance information, some of my favorite things?
- Support for 64 bit.
- Multithreading.
- native OpenGL support without a wrapper.
- Improved Physics.

Congrats to Valve for finally releasing this! It's going to be interesting to see how this affects things like TF2, GMod, CS-GO or the Half Life 2 games if they are ported over to it.

By this point I think if Valve released anything with a three in it, half of the gaming community would suffer heart attacks at the sheer shock of it.

I don't know, honestly, I'm more surprised that Left 4 Dead 3 hasn't been announced yet.

As far as Source 2, I dunno. It'd take a lot for me to care about the engine at this point. Valve's burned up a lot of goodwill at this point, as far as I'm concerned.

Yay for other people if they can get something they enjoy from it, though.

...I thought we knew about this already? I remember hearing about Source 2 months ago, /r/tf2 was discussing the possible implications of it after someone found references to it in a DOTA2 update. Not that TF2 will get any benefit from it, CS:GO and DOTA2 are Valve's big cash cows now, but it's a nice thought. Wonder what (if anything) modders will be doing with it, the first version of Source was massive for modding.

The difference between then and now is that there is an official update page just released for Dota2 detailing the Source 2 update. This mean's that we get to see some of Source 2 in action as well as knowing that we get to use it very soon now.

Source 2? Cool! :D

Dota 2 Reborn? ... :|

Here's hoping the follow-up news applies to me this time.

Hoping for one of the Half Lives, CS Go or TF2 to get a Source 2 upgrade? I'd quite like to see how Valve's "Shiny New Engine" looks when it's viewed up close in an FPS and I can channel my inner TotalBiscuit to rub my face against wall textures.

Maybe Left 4 Dead 3 next? I'm really hoping for a new IP, though, I've got this itch I haven't been able to scratch in a long time...

Thanks for posting this.

Kinda excited at the prospect of seeing some games ported over, but moreso for what could be coming to make best use of the engine.

Have to agree with this sentiment. Valve have been very anti-gamer in recent years with some pretty stupid decisions (even since Ep2, really), I'm kind of surprised so many people still like them so much.

Porting a gamer over also seems pretty underwhelming, you'd think we'd be seeing a brand new game to show it off.

Sooo...is this good news or bad news for my toaster of a computer?

Back in 2007 I could run Team Fortress 2 on high graphical settings with no fuss. Fast forward hundreds of updates later and I've had to downgrade to DX 8 mode to maintain a halfway decent framerate. Would the higher fidelity visuals of Source 2 render TF2 unplayable for me? Or will the new, streamlined engine cut through the bloat that eight years of updates have wrought on the game?

Source 2? great.

Wake me up when a game I care about is built around it. I shouldn't have to say which game that is, so I won't.

I had thought this was already officially announced? Whatever, good news. Now hopefully they will begin work on a new game, now... Oh who am I kidding, they are going to spend the next 5-6 years porting all their existing sources games to this before we get any hints even of anything new. We all know that Valve is incapable of releasing a game with a 3 in the title. XD

Alien Swarm?

OT: I can only hope that Source 2 is a vast, vast improvement on Source. Source is legitimately one of the shittiest engines I have ever had the misfortune to play games on.

Maybe they could call it "Re-Source"?
Also Left 2 Die would be funny and hilariously confusing title for a next entry in the L4D franchise.

Exciting! I wonder if this will lead to Valve joining the "HD remaster" club and give their biggest Source titles a graphical upgrade if they also get ports to Source 2.

And since it's quickly going to become the elephant in the room, I'm sticking by my opinion on HL3 still being a thing that's going to happen. And in my wildest dreams, Valve releases it in the same way Beyonce released her last album: no announcement, no trailers, no previews. They just drop it on the Steam store one day and wait for people to find it. And then Steam proceedingly crashes and breaks the Internet in a matter of minutes.
