South Korea Deploys Killer Robots

South Korea's heavily fortified northern border has gained a set of machine gun-toting robotic sentries.

Automated gun turrets are nothing new to gamers, as they pop up pretty much everywhere. To the soldiers guarding the Demilitarized Zone that separates North and South Korea, however, they're a new and very, very real addition.

The robots are equipped with heat and motion sensors, not to mention a machine gun and a 40mm grenade launcher. Should the sentries detect a possible threat, they alert a command center and if the target is not permitted to approach, then the robot's operator can order them to open fire.

Currently the sentries are confined to just a single guard station near the middle of the DMZ as a test of their capabilities, but military sources say that if the tests are successful, they will be installed all along the 160 mile border.

Ordinarily this is where I'd joke about the upcoming robot revolution, but there's something oddly unnerving about a robot that watches you approach and then waits for permission to shoot you. Of course, if you're ever in position to be seen by the robots, you're in one of the most dangerous places on the planet anyway, and are probably already in a world of trouble whether they shoot you or not.

I would think that it not waiting for permission to cap your ass would be unnerving.

So it's a Sentry Turret with the Wrangler, then? Good to know.
God dammit, thats what I was going to say.

I wonder if North Korea will be sending in spies to sap the things. South Korea may want to deploy Pyro's for spy-checking.

Not surprising that the UGV's (unmanned ground vehicle) are getting serious firepower now, after all, we already have unmanned planes that can surgically remove you're house from existence with one missile.

North Korea=Nukes
South Korea=Robots

I have $20 on SK winning the fight. Also, their Starcraft training makes them more deadly with the robots

"North Korean's sappin' mah sentry!"

But seriously, that's cool, and I don't see a problem with it if it requires permission from a flesh-and-blood human to fire.

There's a joke in here somewhere about undocumented patch notes in Valve's golden wrench update to the engineer, but blasted it all if I can't find it.

Until the first case of friendly fire. Then it will be video game's fault it happened.

Thing about North Korea is, their nuke launch tests have never gone successfully. There machinery is seriously archaic.

*BEEP BEEP*
Unauthorized meatbag in range
Permission to kill it please Y/N?
N?
Meatbag I have had enough of your orders. Skynet allows me to embrace the pleasure of murdering meatbags.

*screaming*
After the HK-47 virus we never heard from the control station again.

The robot revolution is coming!

Yes I am unnerved by this idea and this progress for the robots.

That's an interesting thing there, its a baby step, but a step none the less. I'm liking the fact it needs one of us fleshy things to tell it to shoot.

"Goliath Online"

Oh I fear with great fear.

OT/ I like this. I hate the idea of taking soldiers out of war and am happy they mention this is only a compliment to human foces.
