Mass Effect or its sequel.

Either will do you good.
*facepalm*

He said spaceSHIP.
Your main hub IS a spaceSHIP. and your fighting against a race of gigantic spaceSHIPS.

But if thats the way it must be then galactic civilizations 2 is great fun. If you buy it with all three expansions, some games can last months...
Wow. You're really going to try and justify calling ME a spaceship game? Are you kidding me? Mass Effect is a 3rd person shooter. He's talking about spaceship combat and gameplay. There is not a single moment in either Mass Effect game that lets you use a spaceship.
Now, did you really need me to say that? Seriously dude, that's like calling Halo a platformer because there's a jump button.

freelancer as was said before is pretty much it. then there is eve but to be honest that is boring unless you enjoy mining for hours in an mmo only to be destroyed in a lame version of combat.

Do you? That was the least funny joke I've ever heard.

Sword of the star is a good turn-based 4x game, with 3D combat, but the interface will screw you over, find a paper and take all the hotkeys and stuff on it, because its confusing as hell.

Sins of a solar empire is a good rts, but the gameplay is too symetrical. Races are too similar.

Homeworld 2 is also a good game. Real 3D. Lots of mods.

Galactic Civilization 2 is very good (only single player) Takes a while to learn all the stuff but the AI is great.

Space Empires 5 is a very, deeply, flawed game. Inteface is just wrong, the game engine is poor, inneficient and LAGS like hell even with small ammount of stuff on screen. But i still have a little love for it for the sheer micromnagament potential it have. Want something? you CAN do it. Use balance mod.

Im looking at "Distant Worlds" thses days, look like it have potential. Only SP however, but everthign else (interface, automation of some things you dont want to take care of, ship design) are interesting. Too bad it doent support MP.

Freelancer is fun early on, but ultimately boring since its so easy to hit the top of the power curve. Play it with mods that balance the different ships/weapons (some mods allow you to drive battleships). Vanilla game have its nice moments, but its a linear power progression. Explorations is.. kinda fun, but takes AGES.

Freespace 2.

Getting the game plus the full Source Code Project provides for a very awesome experience.

By spaceship do you mean a space setting, so thats like alot of Sci-Fi games, id recommend Starcraft II in that case.

Otherwise games with a spaceship under you control, then Homeworld,Homeworld 2,Jumpgate Evolution and Eve Online all feature space combat.
I was reading about Jumpgate and thought it was pretty cool, then I saw it was a MMO, which made me sad.

Would you recommend it over Freelancer?

Good. Glad you didn't like it. Now stick to the OT please.

Another good series that slipped my mind is the Master of Orion games. They're pretty deep, though if you get the third don't play it until you find the last path for it because otherwise its pretty bugged up.

Star Control 2 is also a fun one, and the third one isn't bad either.

Their older games though so I understand if you don't feel like trying them out.

That depends. They are both a different style of game. Freelancer has an open world that you can explore. Freespace 2 has a linear storyline. Both are great games, I'd suggest getting both if you can. Freelancer can be hard to find. Freespace 2 is at http://www.gog.com.

Project Sylpheed is a decent space shooter with a really good story. It's from the people responsible for the old Silpheed games.

X2 or X3 for a more new school, 3D space game.
I prefer X3 Reunion over Terran Conflict but whichever way you go it's huge. Basically

X3=exploration

Escape Velocity Nova. I had it recommended in a podcast so I checked it out and fell in love plus it has a fairly long demo to try so you don't have to waste money if you don't like it and it is out for both windows and mac so you can play it on either OS. Although I assume you're a windows user so that's probably not a selling point.

Freelancer and the "X" series are great space games if you like open world exploration. Games like Freespace 2 are more linear and lean more towards combat, and then there's Allegiance (Search up Free Allegiance), which is a Space Combat/RTS hybrid, real fun if you can get into it and learn how to play.

Sins of a solar empire is all you will ever need. I trust you have gotten the expansions?

Sword of the Stars is one I have been looking at but have not gotten it yet.

Any of the good starwars games, rouge squadron or tie fighter?

Good to know others are in the same boat as me.

I am TEC all the way what race are you?

Haven't seen Darkstar One mentioned yet and I've been enjoying that game. I haven't gotten very far in the story so I don't know how that is but the combat is pretty solid and you're definitely in a spaceship shooting down other space ships.
