I finally got around to trying the Space Giraffe demo for the PC. I like to consider myself open to new and unique game design ideas, and I want to support independent developers whenever possible. But I'm just not getting this. Am I missing out on something? Is there some secret I'm missing, or some insight into the game someone can offer? Or is it really just what it appears to be - a half-assed, stroboscopic mess?

Isn't it like trying to play Geometry wars with a blurry screen?

Forget Space Giraffe, go to www.newgrounds.com and play the "James the [adjective] Zebra" series. There's even a Space Zebra one. There's a christmas one too for now, where you dodge explosive pudding.

It appears your missing whatever illegal substance the maker of this game was using at the time.

It's like someone took a perfectly good game of Tempest and put disco lights under it.
Uh, Jeff Minter made Tempest.

He also made this. Which is Tempest but with acid backgrounds. Considering how he threw a hissy fit on how Frogger sold much better than Space Giraffe did on XBLA while implying that people like to pay for old shit and not for new stuff...well, his game is also old crap. With acid backgrounds.

So, no. It's just Tempest with messy backgrounds. It's not particularly new or unique. It's not particularly fresh. It's exactly the sort of thing indie devs get accused of and there's a good reason nobody really cares about it.

Looks to me like a game entirely for pot heads or other druggies to play.

Must of sold a ton on the xbox marketplace with the 20-24 year old crowd.

No he didn't. He made Tempest 2000, a sequel to the original for the Jaguar.

David Theurer created Tempest while working for Atari.

This came out ages ago for the 360, I've been meaning to buy it, just to see how bad it was, now I don't have to. Thanks.

I think wtf just about sums that up. Although on some strange level, I think I got what the video meant, although I would never be able to explain it in words.

A fellow person who only tried out Space Giraffe after they saw the demo link up on Fileplanet, eh?

Well, having played the demo a bit, I have to say that perhaps the reason why a lot of people exalt it is because it is very much a game that exudes raw, challenging gameplay.

The demo doesn't show it off very well because it's pretty much the tutorial. I haven't bought the retail either, but I can extrapolate. Basically, having all these bullets and enemies and power zones and jump pods and bombs and positional considerations, ect, ect - it's very good mental exercise, alright? It's got the same appeal as a good Geometry Wars clone.

That it has a goofy (or possibly drug-sympathetic) multimedia experience just heightens the fun.

Space Giraffe is not a game. It is a great way to meet people. Leave it playing on your TV and enjoy the lovely conversation piece a broken looking TV is.
