I have been searching for ages and still havent been able to find a game that delves into space combat effectively. Strong RPG elements, buying and selling different components for your ship, possibly building a fleet, but mostly building your own ship. Any suggestions, Escapist? Doesnt matter if it is single player, multiplayer, or MMO, as long as it isnt the regular old lame-o MMOs you find online. Thanks

Freelancer, definitely Freelancer is exactly what you're looking for...

Also the Star Wars Galaxies space combat was actually pretty good and customization had some depth to it... too bad the games getting killed...

Actually I haven't played since before the updates so I'm not entirely sure on Star Wars...<.<

Freelancer for light and the X series (X: Beyond the Frontier all the way to X3) for very heavy. Freelancer keeps it pretty fun without getting overcomplicated, a few might rave at me for calling it simple but compaired to the X series it is very simplified. This is not a bad thing, I hate the X series for its overcomplication (the Star Wars X-Wing, Tie Fighter, and X-Wing Alliance was about as complicated as I'm willing to get). Also Tachyon: The Fringe and Freespace are definately worth looking into (though they lack the build of a fleet).

If you're willing to check out some older games, then maybe Star Control 2 or the Wing Commander series.

Has anyone played EVE Online? It's supposed to be an excellent space trader/fighter RPG style game. I haven't tried it myself but I'm definitely curious to hear from someone who has.

Each of these games look fantastic, but initial looks at them dont show very much customization, except for the X games, but they seem difficult to get into. Thanks for all the suggestions so far everyone, lets keep going

also look into black prophecy, a fighter only game but you can change quite a few thing about the ship. And majorly visual improvements between body parts.

You may want to check out the Evochron series of games, I've only seen screen shots but they look pretty impressive. I'm pretty sure there is an upgrade system in that one, I don't know about building a fleet though. I've tried X3 a couple of times but it is pretty deep.

That one looks pretty good, I think I might download it in the morning. Any other contenders?

if you're talking about be prepared to pay for it, a lot too also a healthy downpayment of 20% of you life too. Black prophecy on the other hand is free ATM can't tell for the future though.
Damn we need more games like these space "sim" I'll call them.

Black Prophecy is what I was referring to, and yeah, I agree. We need way more of these.

escape velocity nova, it's got everything you want.

side note: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.297853-Poll-Ladies-and-gentleman-The-most-overpowered-video-game-weapon-of-all-time this game called 'Star Ruler' seems to have unlimited customization, but i can't say anything about the rest of the game.

Also a game call miner wars, if I remember the title correctly. It's a 6dof game with destructible environments and ship customization.

Did it w/ minecraft and worked like a charm

Nexus was a really fun game, beautiful too, just really damn hard.
The Star Wolves Series comes to mind, tough but allot of customization and rpg style party building.
