I'm wondering about this too. I have four speakers in the front of my setup as well, but two of them are only used as stands for the other speakers, since they have a resistance of 4 ohms, and I don't feel like frying my system. They came with my last setup, which was actually tuned to use them, and are bigger than the ones I have up front currently. I plan on replacing them with something bigger as soon as I can get out to a thrift shop.zfactor said:Well, I have a logitech 5.1 surround sound system. I've never put it at 100% for more than 2 seconds. Because it's really loud.
I'm sort of confused as to why you put 4 larve speakers right in front of you. If they are all around you, it drowns out outside noise and totally immerses you (audioly? well, you get what I mean...) in the game/movie. Also: Dedicated subwoofer. Yum.
If i had the space i would happily put the speakers around my room and make it feel more like a surround sound system, but in my room i dont have this luxury, firstly its rather small, secondly the only plug sockets are on the side of the room with the speakers, and secondly my walls on the other sides of the room are plaster, and hollow, it cause my walls to vibrate so i dont wanna risk damage around the room.zfactor said:Well, I have a logitech 5.1 surround sound system. i gotta agree, sounds well worth it, nothing like blasting your music at ridiculous levels to entertain yourselfRaven said:In my bedroom I have a full 5.1 Tannoy speaker set up driven by an 800W Onkyo amplifier which is capable of delivering HD audio plus handling all the HDMI devices I have (blu-ray, xbox, 40" 1080p LCD)... And then my PC plugs into it all so I have my TV as a monitor and a £2000 worth (new) sound system to enjoy it with
Overkill? yes... Worth it? FUCK YES!!

but i must say some of the systems sound nice.
its not that the room itself is majorly tiny, its what the room is filled with, i have a king size bed which is a bunk bed which takes up a large portion of the room, to the side of that is 2 large wardrobes which are built in, and a 5 draw high set of drawers to the side, and a large wooden window next to that, leaves very little, bar the path from my door to my bed.Owyn_Merrilin said:cplsharp said:If i had the space i would happily put the speakers around my room and make it feel more like a surround sound system, but in my room i dont have this luxury, firstly its rather small, secondly the only plug sockets are on the side of the room with the speakers, and secondly my walls on the other sides of the room are plaster, and hollow, it cause my walls to vibrate so i dont wanna risk damage around the room.

How small is small? The livingroom in my apartment is maybe 6X7, but that's plenty of room for a modest 5.1 setup. If you have enough speaker wire -- which can be bought on the cheap if you know where to look -- the location of the power outlet doesn't have any effect on speaker placement. Can't really comment on the plaster walls, though -- I don't think I've ever seen a house that didn't use drywall, aside from the occasional old house with wood paneling.
Edit: I do have experience with hollow walls, though. Wall construction using drywall involves hollow walls with wooden studs every few feet, used to nail the drywall to. I've made walls like that vibrate more often than I care to think, but then I'd imagine drywall is a bit tougher than plaster.
