The gramma Nazis are here. Run!

Okay, I have noticed some instances of poor gramma, but you are placing all newbies in the same contrived sailing device. Okay you admitted to being fascist.

I mean it wasn't so along ago that all of us... Well okay maybe I am still really a newbie, but my point is that on the whole newbies are generally noobs, and it's the job of pros to teach them.

Wow, the power of 1337 speak.

I digress, it would be nice to see threads that I actually understand. I mean, if the grammar and spelling is so poor that I can't even tell what the OP is trying to say or ask, that's an issue.

Though I do give those who learned English as a second language a but more leniency, I've notice that most of them do try.

Normally I don't capitalize anything, it's just one of my quirks. (I think capital letters are rather unsightly), but I assumed no one would take me seriously if I posted like that. Perhaps I should just type like a normal person. :sigh:

Also, it makes me wonder if these people slept through all their English classes, or simply refuse to read... Quite an unsettling thought.

I think you are being a little anal retentive. I am a longtime viewer but only a recent poster, and I think you will scare or piss off new people. Not all people are blessed with good communication skills, but deserve the right to be heard(or read, whatever). You also need to take in account that English might not be their first language or that they may have dyslexia like myself. If bad spelling or grammar is the worst part of your day, then you should feel lucky because a lot of people have it much worst.
I don't see it as a question of good communication skills. My sentences have the aerodynamics of a shed [my metaphors suck too, as demonstrated], but from what I've seen, people seem to get the message.
This is simply a matter of downloading autocorrect/spellcheck software and mulling over what you're about to throw into the forum.
If you're among the privileged few in this world who's fully literate and has access to a computer, you should acknowledge that and uphold certain standards.

As for people for whom English is a second language, they can GTFO out and stop taking our jo-..
No. From what I've seen, non English-speaking users tend to apologise for any possible mistakes and state their reason.
Heck,I've been speaking the language for about 10 years now, and still make mistakes. That's only to be expected. But I do my best to make things presentable, if not aesthetically pleasing.

I don't mind the occasional spelling mistake, as I'm very prone to them. I've had to use the spellcheck here many a time.

What bugs me is when people constantly refuse to use proper punctuation. I mean come on. You're sitting in front of a QWERTY keyboard, there's absolutely no excuse to not use punctuation. It's not that hard and it gives your opinion much more weight in most people's eyes.

Why don't we just have a required post count before they can make a thread.

So say you need to have made 30-50 posts without angering the mods.

As long as the mistakes aren't just because the person couldn't bother to type in a coherent thought, I'm fine with the spelling of posts. If there were just two suggestions I could make, the first would be that The Escapist just get a spell-checker for posts that works on all browsers, if that's possible. The second, which I know some people would disagree with me on, is that new members, say until 50 posts or so, shouldn't be able to start threads. They'll be able to do everything else, but no starting threads. By 50 posts in, anyone will realize that they can't act or type like an idiot and that "Halo3 vs CoDWaW" threads are old and tired.

Edit:

As long as the comment/thread..etc is simple to read and easy on the eye, and the writing is not text message or msn style then im ok with it.

Wats up wth tht? <--- This for example, how hard is it to add the extra h, I and a?

I agree entirely, people should be REQUIRED to test the water and learn what a community is like. That way we can limit trolls (well troll threads anyway) to an extent and stop the attention whoring. In most threads, the majority of people will ignore stupid posts, but if we have a stupid thread, people tend to pay them a lot more attention.

Most Web Browsers these days come with a spellchecker anyway, at least Safari does, don't think IE does though.

If only we could find a way to dispel the idea that net speak (or whatever you want to call this abbreviated crap) makes you look cool... As for general spelling mistakes such as misused "their", "your", etc. I doubt we'll be able to do anything about that. People just don't care anymore, and it saddens me.

Welcome to the Escapist!

This "net speak" is terrible, I don't even abbreviate my text messages (dictionary is awesome!) It really comes down to what they are allowed to get away with, if people point out the issue in a discreet private message, rather than telling the whole thread, it would A. Save face for the poster and B. Stop a flame war erupting.

Most of the time they might not know, some will do it by accident and assume you are calling them an idiot when you call them up on it, starting the aforementioned flame war.

We could always refer them to wiki-how. http://www.wikihow.com/Use-You're-and-Your =P

Personally, as long as I can understand what somebody is trying to say (which let's be honest, is pretty easy for the most part) their grammar and spelling is irrelevant.

Mm. I have no problem comprehending the offending posts either [that famous study about being able to understand a word even if the consonants are all jumbled or removed is seemingly true], but it just brings down the tone of an otherwise great forum.

Seriously, you whiners piss me off a lot more than anybody who's just writing with bad grammar or spelling.

People make mistakes but they don't do them on purpose.
Give it a rest already.

No, I have not, I'm going to check it out now.
And believe it or not, your scrambled sentence is still less annoying to me than these whiners.

EDIT: Okay, that guy's post is a piece of shit, but not because of the spelling or grammar but because of its content.

I tolltalle ahguree, doude!

(No.)

I myself don't use a spell checker, I just have a passion to not look like an idiot on the internet by spelllin' liek thisz.

And I do get a headache in extreme cases where people speek liek thiz wich is really uhnnoying :) i mean seriouzly!

And on the topic of misspellings, if I spell something that doesn't look right, I type it down on google, and it usually says, "Did you mean blahblahblah?".

But a forum with perfect spelling and grammar...*Dreams about the utopia that would come from it.*
