No, not these ones. I'm talking about space-faring elite soldiers in general.
You know how today's shooters are jam-packed by badass power-armour-wearing railgun-toting ass-kicking bubblegum-chewing elite soldiers (or "Marines", for short) who coincidentially fight in an interplanetary warfare and travel through space. Their universal problem is lack of variety and characterization. If you would make a game about SPESS MEHRENS, what spin would you put on a characters and idea itself?

Well, except for using 40k space marine type, obviously.

I'd make them travel through space.

Oh wait.

I'd probably just Bioware syndrome it, turn a few of them into archetypes. You know, with one being an experienced ass-kicker, one being a snappy youngin' eager to kick ass, one being a dark, brooding, quiet ass-kicker who had some loved ones get their ass kicked back in the day, and maybe one who gets his ass kicked but returns to kick more ass after getting rescued and augmented, now carrying a BFG [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BFG].

Oh, DAMN.

Whatever. ._.

Throw it in a battletech-ish universe that's full of drama and intrigue and get the characters involved in some background clashes, (a la Tribes: Vengeance), and make them come together against a greater good - NO.

Or that works.

I'd probably make them less retarded. More like the actual military, and less like the useless, wise-cracking jerks you see in the Halo games.

Honestly, I'd have them recruit aliens into their forces and be a driving force of peace and equality throughout the universe. I don't really want them to be another 'Humanity HELL YEAH' group of military giants.

The marine crew would be like squadron 653 or something, and they wouldn't be very "stuperfied", or even great. Their weaponry would start off weak, and easily breakable, but once more command posts are captured, better equipment comes available, but if the equipment isn't looked after or guarded sufficiently, it degrades quickly, and enemies can raid your supplies.

I'd have a marine crew consisting of:

- A homosexual leader whos not effeminate, and is actually as bit of a sadist.
- Lighthearted, laid back second in command guy
- Foul-tempered, foulmouthed, and impulsive woman who likes to carry big guns
- Quiet and serious rookie
- Experienced, but not old, soldier coming back from leave that has everything to lose. Not the leader as his mind is not 100 pecent stable, (has random outbursts of madness, and mild shellshock).

Game would be set during the mid-end of a war, with alot of soldiers been patched up and sent back. You'd start in the war room, where you choose, (acting as the general), which existing command posts you put the crew on, (each one would give a different sequence of levels, and character development).

Hey, homosexual space marine is MY idea! But whatever. It's still original.

There's a book I read. The Vorpal Blade, about humanity's first interstellar space ship. I would suggest you read the first one in the series (Into the Looking Glass) because if you don't, nothing will make sense. Anyway, it's about the crew, and especially the Marines learning what it means to be in a Space Navy. Hint: make sure you pack lots of duct tape and body bags.

Always pack duct tape...always...

How about Space Marines that act like actual Marines, and remain cool under pressure and in a firefight without being macho bullshit assholes?

I'll think of something later...

I'd take away the 'soldier' part of the trope and make them space marine mercenaries and portray the soldier types as the bad guys blindly working the Faceless Military Commanders. Sort of like Firefly.

Um, in Firefly, at least up until Serenity the Alliance seemed to be more a bureaucratic entity which, while it had it's share of bad eggs, seemed to be doing more good than bad.

I would have them hide in metal boxes.
Okay okay I'll be serious.
The first thing i would do would be to throw away the ridicoulus power armor they're always wearing. Then I would steal the armor from a Terran Ghost wich is arificial muscle fibres with a thin layer of ceramic plating over. Lightweight and functional. And they would have guns where the clip looks like it would hold more then five rounds. I mean take a look at a Space Marine's bolter the calibre of the barrel is somthing like a fifth of the length of the magazine. And they wouldn't all be men! If you assume that they are wearing an armor that enhances the wearers strenght (wich the military have in prototype stage right now) what diffrence would gender do? They would also have minds of their own and not have personalitys thats exactly identical to each others. And some of the stuff previously mentioned, but I'm to lazy to quote/copy that.
