I just got thinking about this with the news of two games being developed by two different ex Bioware employee teams. With Beamdog making a new Baldur's Gate something, and Stoic Games making a new RPG called The Banner Saga, I was curious what people thought about this sort of thing.

Several of these splinter companies are built out of original or veteran team members moving onto new things. Obsidian was founded by ex Black Isle devs, and Respawn is made of the old Infinity Ward.

One thing that gets thrown about so often these days is that developers are accused of abandoning their roots, see: Bioware, Bethesda, Infinity Ward, Blizzard, etc. So how do you feel about these new devs made up of old members?

I like it. I think if a group works together well and wants to make games then good for them. I appreciate that the industry is fluid and small enough that things like this can happen. When the industry becomes so big that nobody knows anyone else and companies can't splinter then things are going to become a slog.
