i have been really hype for the old republic mmo so i decided to finally play the kotor games. the first one was boring as hell to me, in every possibly way. the characters were boring, the character development was pathetic and i have never cared about a story less. the combat, even at the end, was just tedious. i didnt even need to use any force powers most of the time. 99.9% of my battles were "flurry, flurry, flurry...done." the final level they didnt seem to know how to make it challenging so they just decided to throw endless weak enemies at you.

kotor 2 was better in almost every way. the combat was more interesting and much smoother, the story was intriguing and had mystery to it. by the end the story very well may have fallen apart and i cant speak for any character development because i only made it about 5 hours into the game before it became so buggy it was almost unplayable. i know it wasnt just me because i have seen numerous forums about dialog bugs and bugs where the game wont let you save or load game files. i played both on pc, maybe they worked better on xbox.

im still excited for the old republic, but much less so now. based on the amount of bugs in kotor 2, im not entirely confident the old republic will work at all.

i know im probably in the minority. i know of only one other person who hates kotor as much as i do but why does everyone love this game so much, besides that fact that it has star wars in the title? what am i missing?

KotOR is the greatest thing to happen to Star Wars. First part was increadibly awesome and second just blew my mind, it was pure genius.

It can be played on many different ways, it has great story, great dialog system...

Combat is very good and looks nice.

I don't know how you can not to like it.

.....

What is this, i dont even..

The storyline whilst being clichéd is really deep, i found the combat to be rather intriguing and the force powers are useful like master speed or force shield.

I liked all the characters, even the whiny blue *****.

Oh yeh, and i only found this game when it was on special like 2 weeks, ago.

Maybe its not your cup of tea.

That said the random crashes are so fucking annoying. ARGH! I have lost 6 hrs of playtime due to corrupted saves or just random crashes.

Well, I agree with you insofar as the game mechanics and combat were terrible. Even on the original Xbox they were a bit choppy and cumbersome. And they only get worse on newer consoles as it wasn't designed for them.

However, what I believed made this game good was the level of story and dialogue. Remember not to be anachronistic, the game was made almost a decade ago. And the graphics and game play was good back then. But the story is meant to be quite immersive. Yes, the first was a bit predictable when I thought about it, but it was the moral choices that made the game fun to play and made you think. Also, pretty much the best part of every single bioware game ever.

The story in the second was far superior, given the dark theme and mystery, but it kind of falls apart at the end and is really too hard to follow unless you play through twice. Plus, who didn't figure out Kreia was evil? You would have to be blind not to notice that.

Maybe the reason I like it and you don't is simply the order in which they were played. I am speaking from memory of years ago. KOTOR was the first Bioware game I had ever picked up. since then, every single one has been better. Perhaps because you played a retro game AFTER it was big, maybe that prevents you from seeing it in his time. Just postulating.

But if you don't like it don't feel bad. Nothing's perfect and no game is popular to everyone.

Also, some characters are deeper than others.

Take Carth as an example. He is a rather shallow example of the cliched veteran with family issues. As a matter of fact, I would not be exaggerating to say that he was overwhelmingly voted the most unpopular KOTOR character of all time. But other characters have a deeper past. The wookie's exile (I forget his name) was intriguing, as was Juhani's past and the story of Bastila. Especially those who carry over into the second game such as Canderous.

The droids weren't much fun either.

I enjoyed it. I played it on xbox and its still a big favourite.

I mean, sure, it was clichéd and all but I liked the story, the epic battles, the little quests, the secret dialogue, ect.

Edit:

This does need to be said though. Why do you care what other people think? Either you like it or you don't.

I found it actually worked properly when I replaced the DVD drive on my original Xbox; myself, mind you (I was so proud). That's right, I had problems with Xbox products *before* RRoD. That's vintage fail, right there.

i loved it i played it about 7 years ago when it was still fairly new i haddent really encounterd a diolog system like it before i loved being able to pick what my chr said i didnt see the twist coming in the first one ethier but i agree the ending is tiresome

i didnt like the 2nd one as much while the stroy was fairly good it was not made by bioware that hurt it alittle but not alot because it ment that the 2 games were diffrent if u have played a few bioware games you have played them all so the compleatly diffrent type of stroy ment it was interesting enough to play

and while i like them both i played jade empire first that was a great game that hooked me onto bioware and made me go looking for others the fact that its got starwars in its name means nothing other than its the only star wars game i have ever liked cept for a few of the space combat flight sims

Interestingly, most people say that the combat was easier in the sequel. I don't think that Bioware Austin have shipped a game before but the first was made by the original Bioware studio and the sequel was made by Obsidian. I can't say if the MMO is going to be the cliche and slightly boring KotOR or the buggy KotOR or both. It's more likely going to be a WoW type game with some of the, ahem, well loved characters and plot developments of the first game only watered down a bit more.

:O

I'll respect your opinion, but NEVER will I agree. Both stories of KotOR are excellent. I mean come on, it's Revan we are talking here! REVAN!

Maybe you just dislike Star Wars, I don't know. I enjoyed the combat and the Force powers, had a great fun with the characters. Sorry it didn't worked for you. It's a personal choice and a matter of taste.

I really enjoyed the first one, the second one was good but not as well done (probebly due to the one year time limit). I played them both on xbox and experienced no bugs in the first one, but a few glitches in the second one.
The fights do get easy sometimes but you can always just turn up the difficluty level.

I played KotOR (and KotOR2) mostly for the story, which was excellent. The combat got a bit tedious towards the end, true, but the pacing was still great. Oh, and Rakata Prime is one of my favorite video game locales.

i just wanted to understand why everyone seems to love it so much. it just seemed strange that id be pretty much the ONLY person who didnt like the game.

i love star wars, for me that was the main redeeming factor of the kotor games (that and the voice acting which, ill admit, was pretty damn good). ill admit the twist with reven was somewhat interesting but it seemed like it was underplayed and the main plot was the star maps and all that and when you found out the story behind them at the end, i felt like that was supposed to be a big moment but i hadnt even been curious about the star maps or the star forge so i was just kinda like "ok...so can we hurry up and get to the star forge now?"
i also had an issue with malak. i thought kotor 2 did a much better job with the villain (but as i said, the bugs made me quit before i got very far so i dont know much about that character). there was just no subtlety to malak, whenever he spoke i felt like he should be wearing a t-shirt saying "bad guy" and shouting, "I'M EVIL!" palpatine was evil but he was subtle and manipulative, darth maul was one of the most badass star wars villains (despite being stuck in such a bad movie) and never said a single word. the entire time i just felt like malak just wanted attention...and the fact the he was pathetically easy to beat, both time you fought him, didnt help either.

when all is said, i could overlook kotor 1's faults if the second one hadnt been so broken. i had a bug that skipped over all npc dialogue and would always jump straight to my response, a bug that caused cutscenes to have no audio, and worst of all, a bug that would cause the game to freeze every time i tried to load anything but an auto-save...and then later i discovered it was randomly deleting current auto-save files and replacing them with old auto-saves

I'm sorry, but you just can't lay praise on palpatine for being subtle and manipulative and then say darth maul was awesome even though he has his "LOOK AT ME I HAVE HORNS AND BLACK AND RED SKIN AND SHARP TEETH I'M TOTALLY NOT GOING TO KILL YOU"

It's your opinion, and you obviously really disliked it so... I won't try and change it by pointing every opposite thing, cause funny enough I feel completely different about everything you labeled as flaw in the story and characters. For me... excellent games, as I said before.
