We are. I mean, not every single one of us maybe, but ninety percent at least.

Another sponsored ad showing up in the news section. This.. isn't going to be received well. Bonus points for referring to gamers as having an aversion to the sun and being basement-dwellers.

Sorry was I supposed to discuss something on-topic here? Can't say I've ever heard of blended wines, let alone knowingly tried them.

Edit inspired by someone's later post: Oh yes, I sprung for PubClub membership to avoid all the ads on this site. Gonnae no give me ads please?
Hey now, I do have an aversion to the sun and if Florida wasn't so close to the ground-water table I'd have a basement that I'd frequent for gaming purposes.
Now I also like wine and was huge into V:TM back in the day so this targeted advertising DOES actually fit a demographic within the wide-spread "gamer" demo. Maybe it doesn't pertain to you, or maybe a sarcastic joke about the "all gamers are basement dwelling sun-haters" goes over your head (which is how I chose to read it).
Can we as gamers accept that while not everything applies to us that we're diverse in tastes and therefore some targeted adverts fit some within our sphere?
At least its not a firearm advert saying "Heard you like Call of Duty, well you'll LOVE the new X23-People Destroyer! DISCLAIMER: We don't advocate the use of firearms to solve your social problems, but if thats your thing we have ammo just for you!"
And mind you this comes from a guy who loves firearms and is a responsible gun enthusiast.
That's nice that you fit the demographic the ad was aiming at, but I'd hazard a guess that many others fall outwith it. This is of course the way with all advertising - I never said that there wouldn't be folks that fit that descriptor, I objected to an apparent blanket (or at least widespread) tarring. I didn't read the ad as sarcastic and if it is meant to be taken as such, it fails under Poe's law.

Of course I accept that not everything applies to me, as I'm not an idiot. Appearances can be deceptive though, I do appreciate that. Similarly I also accept that just because something doesn't apply to me, doesn't mean it applies to no-one. I never suggested otherwise. Some targeted ads do fit within our sphere, as you say; I don't mind the ad itself so much, apart from the above-noted 'gamers tend to live in basements and hate the light, lol' part. What I do object to is ads like this showing up in the supposed news section, where they're out of place (ads =/= news) and which makes them harder to ignore - clearly the only reason they're being posted there of all places, is to maximise page hits.

Again, I especially object when the whole reason I paid for membership to this site was to avoid having to put up with ads in the first place.

Not sure why you felt the urge to try and put me in my place by telling me the ad is actually aimed at someone like you?

Was just trying to give you an idea that not everyone fits in the same category within gaming and while you may not appreciate it, others might. There are a lot of gamers who are Vampire: The Masquerade players (considering the love I see on this site for the Bloodlines PC game) so I wouldn't say that it doesn't fit here as much as I feel you insinuate. And also taking offense to an offhand comment about basement dwellers is a bit over the top, but not everyone has the ability to see things the same way so if you're offended, fine.
Sometimes I do feel though that the gamer demographic in part is way too sensitive to small things like that, while at the same time a lot of people on this site toss around the "neckbeard" stereotype with reckless abandon... Seems a bit double standard-ish to me. But I'm not saying you've done that.
Also, it did clearly state it was a sponsored news story, and wasn't like you HAD to sit through it to read another news story. You did click on it, so really the fault lies with you.

I know what you were trying to do - I was just trying to give you an idea it was completely unnecessary.

And also taking offense to an offhand comment about basement dwellers is a bit over the top, but not everyone has the ability to see things the same way so if you're offended, fine.
Well here you're projecting an assumption on to me. I objected to an over-used and lazy stereotype being used not just about gamers, but to gamers whilst trying to hock a product to them - I said nothing about being offended by it. You want to sell me something, put a bit more effort into it than that.

Also, it did clearly state it was a sponsored news story, and wasn't like you HAD to sit through it to read another news story. You did click on it, so really the fault lies with you.
Let's skip the fact that you're aiming at my post in isolation and ignoring the several other people making the same complaint. You're right - I didn't have to click on the story, but again I know this and never suggested otherwise.

Ads are not news.
I paid to not have ads on this site.
I therefore feel I'm allowed to be miffed when ads show up regardless. Clearly other people feel the same way.
