So, is Spore still worth getting or has it been shown to be just a "Oh my goodness this is amazing!" "Eh..." type of game?

I liked it very much personally but apparently a lot of people didn't... I'd still recommend it regardless especially if you like making things :)

NO, don't get it. Yahtzee summed it up best, it's an art proogram for kids. The actual 'game' elements are terrible.

Hm, that's very sad because it seemed like it would have been fun to create things and see them grow. Oh well, I guess my hunt for a game is still on.

It was very, very disappointing. It coulda, woulda, shoulda been something really special. But it ended up being a really awesome species creator tool with a bare-bones game attached.

If you can get it cheap, maybe in the $10~15 range, I'd say go for it. Making a race is fun and the game's fairly entertaining the first time through, and the final stage (Space) should keep you busy for a while. Otherwise, don't bother.

So what are some recommended games that are sort of like what Mr.Moonshine said when he said "God" games. I'm tired of shooting everything and would rather be able to dynamically construct and destroy things. :)

All I'm saying is if you like The Sims and creating things, you will probably like Spore.
It seems like others would have to disagree, though I could be misinterpreting there dislike for the game due to it not living up to a creation game instead of it actually being that they just don't really like creation games.

You now probably get it dirt cheap so why not, it has a neat concept that everyone should see.
But don't expect much of a game, all the slices are quite thin, they obviously spent all their time on the incredible editors, then threw a bunch of second rate game rip-offs together quickly so it could be sold as a game.

Very disappointing. The first phase is pretty fun and the last phase can keep you amused for a while, but there's no gameplay goal (worth going for) so it gets boring after a while - doing the same damn thing over and over again. When blowing up planets gets boring, you know there's something wrong. There was some promise and hints that there are bigger things going on but it falls flat in its execution.

All the ones between the first and final stages are really really bad. I think Yahtzee described it best - like a checklist - and you can literally advance from stage to stage within maybe an hour as opposed to a more gradual and in-depth fleshing out of your creature's development that could realistically take you in a variety of valid directions.

Sorry to jump in but this forum might not be the fairest place to ask, here you will find a lot of hate for any games considered "mainstream" or "casual" *shrugs*

I got Spore on Friday. Played a straight game until the Space age. Doesn't take long for that.
Fun as hell.
I'd recommend getting it if you have even an ounce of creativity.

I got it when it was still hyped up. I occasionally still play it, but having done everything on it and blown up a few planets, its kinda lost its charm.
It is fun to steal everything of value from a planet then destroy it, but the replay value is pretty low.

Oh! And it was the first game to have DRM...
You know that CD key check that has existed for more than a decade? That is DRM. Sorry I was going to glaze over the rant but that's horribly uninformed.

Also Starforce says hi, and that was originally infinitely worse than SecuROM (unless you consider "making your entire PC unusuable" better than "only install the game on three machines before a forced uninstall").

As for Spore, it's unfortunately not that good a game. The technology behind it pales in comparison to technology seen years before (I'm sorry but mapping specific animations to specific creature parts is not procedural) and the lack of any real goals towards the end game means you lose any real urge to play.

I actually tried to come back to it a week or so ago, but i stopped just after the first evolution of the cell stage. I accidentally reminded myself how lack luster the game becomes later on.

Lots of people don't like it, but I remember I found myself thoroughly amused by it. The gameplay is very stale and some of the in-game systems are lacking (at best), so there's a lot of room for improvement with the game.

However, if you're not going into the game expecting an action-packed blockbuster of a game, but instead expecting something where you can just have fun designing cool-looking creatures, ships, tanks, airplanes, rocket ships, and buildings, then it's worth checking out.

I'd probably have a lot more fun if the game actually used your creations throughout the game. But 99% of the creations are the pre-created creatures that were developed by Maxis themselves. It really takes the fun out when even on your 20th playthrough you haven't seen a single new creature.

Also, I'd like to point out that the sequel to Spore, Darkspore, is coming out soon. I'm in the beta and it's actually a lot more fun. They basically combined the customization and premise of Spore with the gameplay of Diablo II. If you want Spore but with a better balance of gameplay and creature editing, then just wait for Darkspore.
