I need to know, why are sports considered to be so entertaining? I come from a family of people who love sports, yet I myself cannot really get interested in sports. They just come across as stupid and boring to me. So I got to wondering

Escapist, why do you or don't you like sports?

I like to watch sports that I like, because it's impressive to see good players do well, and there's just an artistic kind of beauty/intrigue in sport. It's like asking why you watch a movie or listen to music. And going to a sports game and being there, cheering for whatever team you want to win is just an amazing experience.

But the whole super sports fan douchebaggery, I don't understand at all.

I love sports.

I play football myself, soccer to you strange Americans, and that's the main reason, I guess.

Supporting your local team also brings a delight in good times when your team is performing well, and a depression when times are down.

Sports to me is an outlet for my feelings, good and bad. Without sports my world would be a much bleaker place, with much less emotion.

It's the same thing for everything someone is passionate about.

Because its great to watch atheletes who are at the top of their game perform against one another, as well as the element of competition and the feeling of supporting a team that you get with top flight and lower standards of sport alike.

Plus seeing sport live is fucking great. Going to football (soccer) matches is great, theres such a good atmosphere, its just a good experiance, like going to see a band or a play. Jst with sports. :p

Yeah, this person has the right idea.

Different folks like different stuff matey. Realising that is pretty a fundamental part of life.

I don't particularly like sports. Don't watch any. I used to play Darts though. The only sport that you're allowed to drink while playing AND are giving sharp, pointy objects to throw. So much fun that game.

Its competition. I follow the NFL with a passion, I play the sport in High School and College. Its fun to watch and makes good conversation. It can be similar to a TV series because the team changes gets better/wore as the season goes on. It is also alot easier to get into sports if your home teams are winners. I've been fortunate to grow up around Boston and have seen six championship seasons over the past ten years.
We can probably tack on a few more this season.......

OT: The competition and watching people do things that "normal" humans could never.

It's the thrill of competition for me. Watching two (or more) people or groups of people struggling to best the other team via scoring arbitrary points may not sound like a lot of fun to watch, but then someone throws a clean open ice hit or fumbles a ball seconds after the snap or winds up to throw a 3-2 pitch or attempts a jump shot with just over a second to go or a corner kick is awarded to the team down by one during injury time or 50 cars turn left one last time or... you get the idea. I'm an NHL fan myself (see my username).

I get that, but it's also relatively true that most people who like the same thing like it for the same couple of reasons. I just wanted to know what reasons those were.
