I love Spotify. It's completely revolutionised my music listening (and yes, I'm aware they don't pay well. But there's a lot of musicians out there who have had money off me they wouldn't otherwise have had). And it recently occurred to me to wonder whether the same model wouldn't work for other media, specifically comics.
Comics have a lot in common with music - they come in small bite-sized chunks of content, and when you come to like one, you tend to want to look at the back catalogue, which is expensive and a bit daunting. I'd love to get more into them but every time I go into Forbidden Planet I get depressed because there's just So Damn Many of them. And if I wanted to really appreciate one of the more significant characters, I'd have to spend an absolute fortune. So instead I hover on the outskirts, reading the quality comics like Sandman and Hellblazer that have a manageable number of issues.
Now imagine I could pay ten pounds a month to read as many old comics off the back catalogue as I wanted. I'd be on that like The Flash. And now imagine if, like Spotify, new artists could also add themselves to the catalogue, it would be a way to get a small return and build recognition for themselves.
Someone should do this.
(And no, fuck you, Captcha. I won't take part in your shitty marketing exercise.)
