It's not a religion, as the only thing that all atheists have in common is a lack of belief in gods. There are no rituals, no dogmas, no strict organization. Apart from disbelief in gods, there is nothing that is true for all atheists. Religions can be quite diverse (based on their interpretation of the same religion) but not to the point of atheism.
Yes, of course they should be allowed to spread their message in that way if everybody else does it with that cannon-thing. So unless you're skewing our view on it through your report, it is definitely a double-standard that should stop.

I don't see why the atheist group shouldn't be allowed to advertise for their meetings. On a sort of related note, there's a similar club at my school and they've recently put posters around to advertise their meetings. The posters something along the lines of "Don't believe in god? You're not alone and we're here to listen" and some smartasses keep adding to it and it's getting pretty funny. It goes:
Don't believe in god? You're not alone and we're here to listen.
(God will listen)
(So will Zeus, Allah, Buddha, etc.)
(So will a psychiatrist)
I'm not sure if anyone has added to it since I've last seen it, but I'll check it tomorrow.

As long as nothing explicit, e.g. dongs or bad language, is put on the cannon, they should be able to put up their advertisements. And don't call atheism a religion - it's not.

Atheism is a religion depending on who the atheist is. Some people are just atheists, while others make it their mission to spread the word that god doesn't exist.
Whatever the case though, that's just unfair, they should be able to write something like that, especially if the christian club gets that many concessions.

This might just come off as silly but...
To many sects of Christianity spreading the word is actually a fundamental part of their faith.
Atheists don't believe in religion, Atheism is not a religion or even a belief (as many Atheists will strongly argue, even here). Therefore what compels an Atheist to place that message there other than as a jab to people who do actually believe something? It is not their obligation nor belief (disbelief?) that they should spread their 'good news' or 'faith' (lack of faith?) so why would they do such a thing? Maybe I just lack insight (disinsight?) but this whole thing seems pretty silly to me.
The real answer is that some Atheists are no different than Christians in more ways than they're willing to admit. They both hold their beliefs (disbeliefs?) as the absolute truth, and think its their right, nay, their duty to make everyone else belief it as well.
Plus it's always hilariously ironic when a religion thread turns into some atheists 'proving religious people wrong' whilst at the exact same moment other atheists complain about the jehovahs who push their beliefs on other people... ha
Oh and in case my point was a bit fuzzy, I think its ok for them to put whatever they want on the cannon, I just don't see why they would feel the need to form 'unreligious' groups. I mean I could form a 'we're not blind group' of people who can see, but whats the point? They seem to be taking atheism and making it into a religion... which its not supposed to be?

Personally, I don't believe atheism is a religion in any sense. It's more of a philosophy, a way to look at life, a scientific reasoning. And I don't mind atheists making information about their thought process available, but I don't really see a reason to "spread the word".
Atheists who have made an intelligent, informed decision in their life choices are fantastic in my book. Atheists who feel it is their goal in life to look down on others who use religion as a comfort in life, or atheists who feel high and mighty for their views are JUST as bad (IMO) as any "Christian" who sings tales of fire and brimstone and children going to hell for liking things like Harry Potter. Neither get their point across and only seem to exist to spark hatred from the other side.

Atheism as a religion...that's difficult to peg down. Religions usually involve the supernatural somehow, so I'm conflicted about answering that part.

Depends what that "Atheist society" really does. It might be what you describe (though I don't see the point of something like that), but it could also simply be a place for atheists to sit down together and discuss religions and philosophy or whatever else.Bakaferret said:

Did the "Atheist society" do any other big thing that maybe angered the school management? Was this maybe just the "last straw"? And what exactly are the purpose and activities of this group?

One of the things that the bible teaches is tolerance, even if you dont agree with someone (do unto others and so forth).
I think that the school should remember than when things like this happen.

Agreed. I was just referring to the question of "Should atheism be spread?" in general. In the case of the OT, yeah...if it was just a poster stating a gathering of people with similar interests, it should be allowed just like any other club or activity. I do see how if it were purposefully inflammatory or something how it could be taken down, though. :/Skeleon said:
