Hello fellow Escapists!

As part of an assignment for our course at uni we (team of sixteen!) need to gather information related to spys in games. For this we have constructed a quick survey and would appreciate it if you guys helped us out. The survey is completely annonymous and should only take a couple of minutes to complete, so if you wouldn't mind filling it out it would be a great help. Once the survey is complete you get to see our teaser trailer, so if you have any comments we would like to hear them. Thanks!

Edit: Survey has finished, link removed. Big thanks to all who took part!

That's well put together. I filled it out and some of the questions were like, "Huh?" but most were normal questions that are quite easy. Also, I think putting a fake mustache on to get past guards wouldn't be fun, but having to assassinate one guard and then slip into their clothes and sneak past Hitman 47 style would be!

ZOMG I forgot to welcome you.
Welcome to the escapist. I was going to warn you about the Religion and Politics forums and trolling and being offensive and doing a lot of stuff that would get you banned, but instead I'll say "Stay out of the basement". Have fun and play nice with the others.

I hear we have got quite a few through already, but it would be great to get some more! Thanks to those who have filled them out! :D

Actually, that was a good survey, had me thinking there for a bit on some of those questions.

Filled the survey in, and good luck.

I disagree with the question about Bond killing all the guards to get past the guard post, unless we are talking Daniel Craig, than that would fit...

Yea, we had a look at several ways spys are portrayed, both in games and in films. One thing that came up is in almost every recent Bond movie there is a lot of explosions or destructive wake. While this wouldn't normally be the case for spys, James Bond is often the first name that appears at the top of the list. Some of the questions kind of link in with the survey. Infact we could even make a discussion while we are at it!

What type of spy would you prefer to be in a game? One that gets the job done without anybody noticing (kind of stealth based) or one that has loads of high tech gadgets and uses guns (more James Bond style)?

I'd like to say that characters and story are more or less intertwined.

Also, the majority of spy games make the mistake of being only about infiltration, and killing tons of guards. There are plenty of different things spies can do; don't fall into the trap!

Welcome to the Escapist, where the definition for "troll" changes weekly.

OT:Good survey, you make better surveys than I do. My surveys have almost no relecant questions.

Well, to answer your question Scythe, can I call you Scythe? (doesnt matter the answer, will call you that anyways), I would want a stealthy spy, I would make reference to Alpha Protocol, which while a pretty buggy and not the best mechanices, still offered a number of ways to go through a mission, except bossfits, which was one of the flaws of that game. But of course with the multiple ways to play, theres no saying we would approch the situation in the same manner, so I am basically a stealthy ninja technophile, which used a pistol/AR, pistol/SMGs, or AR/SMGs combo depending on the mission in qeustion.

But I also agree with Ultrachicken... awesome name... anyways, most spy ames do put heavy emphasis on inflitration and killing guards. If you were to watch some of the old Bond movies, you would see that he did so much more than just those two things, in fact, a book I read (which is suppose to be canon) that h actually dislikes killing indiscriminately, and prefers to avoid killing people if possible. Of course, this probably wouldnt make a good Videogame, which is why he kills everything on sight, which oddly makes some pretty good as well as crappy videogames.

As with ultrachickn, spies dont just go do the stuff James Bond does, if he was an actual spy, he wouldnt have made it so long. Spies can run a gambit of things, from eespionage to assassinations. and could leave a trail of bodies in their wake, or nothing, and you wouldnt even have known they were there.

This is much longer than I intended, so I end it here.

I thought the 'Bond hiding' sounds fun.
And for the last question, was I the only one who put 'Gentlemen...'
Also, loving the last bit of the trailer!

Nice survey. And like that guy said, check out the Alpha Protocol game, most under-rated game of recent years. For telling a spy story it's the best game since Deus Ex.

Thanks! We put quite a lot of effort into it and we thought it came out ok. One problem we had though is that we kind of know the whole story behind it while others don't. Will be interesting to see what people make of it.

Games with spies are about people sneaking around with night vision goggles shaped like fake moustaches and shooting people with silencers attached to ridiculously higher-caliber-than-you'll-ever-need concealable weaponry and cars that can shapeshift into 1-person Anti-Aircraft APCs because no one wants to make a game about someone who gets a government assigned fake identity, immigrates, gets a job and a consequent career with sinister purposes like 20 years from now.
