I'm enjoying the game, what can I say? There are lots of problems in the game but people really are following each other like sheep. Heck people that don't even play the game are posting and complaining about the game...

Yes it has problems. If you don't like the game don't play. If you do then play it. Stop trying to make others hate the game just because you don't like it.

Are they idiots? Seriously?

Anyone could have seen this was going to fail the moment they launched it, It's been TRIED BEFORE, literally with FFXI, if anything is going to be able to stand next to WoW it has to be monumental undertaking like ToR, even then it's very unlikely.

love how they made PC players pay for the beta for the PS3 version...I'm sorry, but this game is just horrible. Played it at a friend's house....I literally have no nice things to say about it. The interface sucks, it's overly grindy (even for an MMO) it gives the player no direction, everything just felt like a hassle...

Meh,
minus points for releasing a broken game,
plus points for admitting to problems and facing them.

Personally, I believe that they will eventually fix the game to a degree that it is an enjoyable experience (for their target audience, please don´t run around claiming it sucks because it does not emulate WOW well enough).
Assuming it survives long enough.

I love reading about this game. It's like watching a train wreck.

There are a lot of things I will forgive when it games to new games. Controls are not one of those things. I don't understand how the hell you can put a game out on the market when the basic controls are to difficult to use. If you can't even get the controls right for your game, that says a lot about the incompetence of the developers. It makes me wonder what else is messed up in this game if they couldn't even get the controls right.

They have just as much admitted it...its a PS3 game they managed to dupe PC players into testing and getting the usual MMO launch bugs ironed out before the real market gets a hold of it.

I feel sorry for the developers who work thier arses off trying to program this game only to have some suit screw it up for a percentage, to hit the dates, to be correct for the analysis.
Can you imagine the mess if programmers could dictate how accoutants were suppose to do thier job ? The books would be a financial mess, just like the games are a rushed nightmare of mish mash code the programmers had to hack together because some suit decided it was release time.

FFXIV in its current state is Farmville evolved. Nothing but tedious repetition. I can't even force myself to play the game while it's free - that is, if there was even any content to play. It's just that terrible and boring; with new, more enjoyable games coming out. I'm not sure how a company's second MMO is released in a worse state than their first (and I'm referring to XI's Japanese release, not the somewhat improved NA one). :/

I give them kudos for fixing a few of the issues, though. I might return to check things out in about a year and a half, at the current rate of progress.

#the biggest problem ff14 has is actually tehe piss poor optimaisation so it requires an uber pc yet looks like something released at launch on the xbox 360.

FF11 is older than WoW and is still Japan's favorite MMO, so you can't exactly say that was a failure.

That said I've never played it myself and don't plan to, nor did I plan on playing 14 even before the bad news started rolling in, so whatever. I hope they do fix the problems so that those interested can enjoy it in the future though.

Square releasing games before they're ready? Gasp.

What happened!?

To answer my own question, this is what happens when Western game design becomes more popular than Japanese game design. "Wah, it's not suited to my PC controls!" Here's a genius idea: get a console then buy it. Look before you leap, at least, read about these problems before you buy the game.

I'm not saying that everyone should have to read about games before they're released but this is a very "buyer beware" industry now.

MMOs, of course, are traditionally forgiven - by those crazy enough to play pay-to-play MMOs, that is - for having huge amounts of problems at launch since they can get fixed over time with subscription fee powers. Final Fantasy isn't getting this treatment. Why? Well, they probably brought that on themselves with the botched FFXIII and the consistent Westernisation of their narratives and story ideas that has simply removed all the heart from the franchise.

Final Fantasy could have stayed properly Japanese and better off for it, without submitting to class archetypes that are so rigid and caricature-like that even Western gamers find them old hat. It could have kept a story with real tragedy and not simply rely on good graphics. It could have kept its turn based battle system against a horde of completely worthless Western review opinions that misunderstood something that plenty of people still found enjoyment in. In other words, it could've died an honourable franchise death rather than bending to appease fans from other countries than its own.

But instead, here we are, and another MMO comes out unfinished. What do we do? Vote with your feet. Don't buy something half as good as you want it to be. Don't give them a "chance", find a better game. They do exist.

Did they even test this game before it was released? Why is this game such a bad case of shovelware? I know that SE usually spends four years to release a title, but if you're going to choose between endless development and making a bad game, which is the better option?
Making a bad game, guarantee the project was running out of money and they wanted to get it out and make some asap, they probably made enough money from the release to give away the free trials while still working on it but I bet they take major losses from this, still, the losses would be much more if they hadn't even released the game
This does not excuse SE of any guilt of any kind. That's pretty much what "shovelware" is, isn't it? You don't care about the quality of your product and shovel it out the second you can turn it on without causing the PS3 to crash. I thought SE took pride in their game craftsmanship, I guess I was wrong. They fucked up big time here, and sadly most of the complaints seem like such obvious things that just another six months of dev time would have solved them all.

Saying they didn't have time to get around to THE USER INTERFACE because they was too busy making it look flashy is pretty much a perfect example of why the JRPG genre is in the state it's in.

As much as it's nice to see a company admit their own fuck-ups, it's still not very re-assuring to hear "Fixing the controls? We just didn't get around to that."

That is something that should just be done at retail.

I find it odd to refer to the included month as a "free trial". To me, a "free trial" happens before you pay.

Well, I think it sounds pretty good. I hate MMO's, but once they've got the bugs ironed out, I might just buy FFXIV.

First of all. This is the same company that made Final Fantasy XI, right? How did it take them 8-12 years to figure out that PC controls differ from console controls? Final Fantasy XI was ported to PC, PS2, and Xbox 360, and it took them THIS LONG to figure out that the controls are radically different from each other? I don't understand this. Do they not pass memos or attend seminars on games made by other teams? Who the hell is running this business? Whoever it is, I think he needs to rethink his career as CEO of this company. Square used to be about making great games for the fans. Now? They are just after money, or something. Because FFXIV doesn't explain anything about their progress as a company, other than they don't keep memos or history books of what to do and what not to do when making a game. Pathetic.

Neither "Western" or "Japanese" design philosophy matters here; the game was destined to suck from the very beginning. Why? Because Squeenix has been doing nothing but riding the Final Fantasy name since the merger.

And they know this.
That's why dog-shit like Dirge of Cerberus and FF13 ever saw the light of day; and both of those games are THOROUGHLY steeped in Japanese design despite being "action-centric".

If Squeenix had just gone out and blatantly ripped off the formula for WoW (like everyone else in the MMO-market has done for the last 5 years) then perhaps the criticism for western design would be valid.

That obviously isn't the case here; the game is basically a broken version of FFXI, with a few "unique" design choices made to force the player into wasting more time than ever.

Squeenix just wanted to take their old system, slap some new graphics on it, force the player to grind more (to keep them in the subscription+entrapment cycle longer) and turn a profit at minimal effort.

Instead, it came back and bit them in the ass.
And they deserve it.
