Tl; dr, Square Enix backs the Ouya. That's it. Oh, and they're rereleasing FF 3. Yes, 3.

I've never really been involved with SE except Chrono Trigger and FF 13. Chrono Trigger I took a liking to while Final Fantasy 13 was close to seriously reconsider jRPGs (VERY understated). Don't get me wrong, turn based strategy battle and story oriented games are great, but SE seems to have become the graphics whore of this generation. I will only need to point to FF 13 and prove my point.

So, does this signify anything? What could we get out of SE? The good old FFs, Chrono Trigger? Or will they start with something idiotic? (I would like to see how Versus goes, not FF 13-6!) What do you think, fellow Escapists?

Uncanny...

EDIT- Chrono Trigger was made by Square Soft, not Enix. But they were merged later on, and I usually think of Square Soft as Square Enix making good games.

Probably the crappy FF3 remake that they put on every single device possible.

And other than that, I'd guess not much.

Ever since the merger with Enix, Square has been in a downward spiral.

Square has been a graphics whore since the SNES. Final Fantasy VI (III US) was the best looking SNES game I had ever seen. Yes, for the time Final Fantasy VII's graphics were amazing as were VIII, IX, X and XII looks better than Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii.

I'm excited to have a major player on board with the Ouya. That said, I won't be surprised if they do stick to small-potatoes titles until the console proves its viability by acquiring a large and active userbase, etc.

Not that part of me isn't hoping they'll help spread the joy of FFVIII. (Yes... that's the number of I's I intended to type. ;)

What do you mean FF VIII? I mean, there was FFVII and FFIX (and they sadly ended the series there) but given how they went from III to VII, I just figured they skipped over it... Then of course they rereleased a bunch of them with the numbering from the Japanese versions to make it easier to keep straight, which brought us the glory of FFV and made talking about FFII and FFIII in the US confusing, but they never did that to an VIII...

(Side note: I'm enough of an FF geek to know how all that really works, but this is kind of like the end of http://xkcd.com/566/ , my fantasy where they didn't go and fuck things up is too comforting.)

Damn... I was expecting to draw ire, but after that burn I may require hospitalization. :) (Not that I see how that xkcd qualifies as a "comic" since it appears to be a historically accurate personal anecdote.)

FFVIII happens to be the first one I ever played, which got me into the series, so I know I'm much more willing to overlook some of its craziness than most. (Also, for some reason my PS2 never got along with my copy of FFIX, so I've never been able to see that one through to its apparently pretty excellent second disc.)

Ouya's more recent announcements regarding media players and 4-controller support (necessary in my book) just keep tempting me to up my donation. Here's hoping it lives up to at least many of our expectations...
