Square Enix censors skimpy male costume from upcoming Final Fantasy game

Well there goes my purchase. Honestly the design still look agile enough for me, but its the principle, I really hate censorship, especially on male characters, because it cements the sentiment that female characters should censored because of few out of shape people feel insecure.

That's a pity. Revealing get-ups for male characters are few and far between, and I'd have liked to see that.
So would I. I'm not entirely sure why, but a lot.

EDIT: Final Fantasy touches some dark part of my psyche. This must be investigated. More flanks and nipples.

OT: Why not have both? The original is fine by me, but I like the new one too. Perhaps the player could be allowed to toggle between them?

Does it stop him from being sexy? No, it just gives it a little more class. Yes there are skimpily dressed females, no they aren't very interesting for the most part and are a common point of questionable game logic. It should never be a default costume, make it like an extra so I can at least put away ALL DAT during gameplay and spoil myself when I'm alone in the house.

I'll be honest, the character clothing looked hideous so the newer version looked waaay better.Sadly I would love more skimpy clothing for men in video games.

You know, I never heard quite this many complaints for Fran's outfit.

Just throwing it out there.

In any case, it looks like I'm not buying another FF game til 15 (assuming I have enough patience/money for it) nice going Square Enix.

I dont like the original costume either, BUT (!) not because of how revealing it is. It looks like they simply painted his skin a different color to simulate clothes.

That said, couldnt they just make a freakin option? Seriously, how hard to put it in the game, especially if you already made them?

So it's all ok for skimpy female costume but not for male?

I take it those who are complaining must be insecure with themselves.
I don't think this is a case of skimpy costumes for male are not alright and female skimpy costumes are, I think this is a case of people wanting skimpy female costumes but not skimpy male costumes. Square is simply responding to those desires.

Square did not remove the costume because of some great controversy or boycott or such. They removed it because a bunch of people said they did not like it and no one (or very few) bothered to say they did like it. Compare to sexy female costumes, where tons of people love them and really want them in the game and constantly say so.

That is not a double standard in the least. At least not from the perspective of Square.

And as far as those complaining being insecure, that is an old and pretty silly argument. There is nothing insecure about liking one thing and not liking another, or about wanting less of something you do not like and wanting more of something you do like.
Excellent post, pretty much sums up the whole situation.

Square took feedback on a bunch of costumes, some people liked, others they didn't, they then in turn responded to the feedback and implemented said changes into their game. There's no sinister agenda here, no conspiracy, just a games company trying to make it's game appeal to as many people as possible to maximise profits and exposure.

Square Enix didn't have to listen to them, but they did, so blame them too.

I don't see why they could have made it an extra option to switch between costumes. If you want to solve everyone's problems, make more damn options.

Finally, someone else that thinks the same. The future of gaming should be more options. I can't see it being difficult after everything else they've thrown into the game.

As someone who is a huge fan of Japan and their somewhat insane approach to character design, I'm a bit disappointed by this.

I'll admit that my first reaction to that character design was a hearty "What the fuck?!", but it was an amused sort of what the fuck.

On the bright side, this seems to have just been an issue of people going "I don't like this", rather than your standard social media offendatron outrage-mongering.

I can't say that I approve of the costume change, but I'm not too surprised, considering that Bravely Default had some costumes changed to be less revealing in the NA version.

And to all of the people saying that the original outfit looked terrible: Have you ever played a Final Fantasy game? Every costume design is terrible. This reminds me of Lightning's sheath in FFXIII, which actually became a running joke among my group of friends; the way it dangles, it continuously bounces off the back of her legs whenever she runs, which looks incredibly uncomfortable.
Maybe in FF13, but from FF10 and backwards, their designs are all pretty subdued and simplistic. The most complex ones are Kuja and Tidus, but Kujas is supposed to be alien and theatric on purpose, while Tidus' is supposed to be celebrety fashonista stupid and look out of place.

Yuffie has that strange arm thing, but other than that, nothing wierd about their clothes at all I'd say.

Again, pretty standard clothing, and uniforms. Nothing wierd going on there.

FF9 has a bit of strangeness to it, but for the most part, it's....kind of period appropriate.

10s about half and half I'd say on reasonable design, although Tidus and Wakka do spend the whole game in their sports wear, rather than standard clothing, so I'll let that one slide. Lulus belts are a bit of a joke though.

I'm not even gay and I preferred the original design.

There is nothing wrong with enjoying male beauty alongside female beauty. I'm not sure why this had to be redesigned at all.

The character was over the top...but that was the entire point, taking it down a few notches doesn't really increase the artistic quality of the imagery, least in my opinion.

Simple facts are I'm not so sure why we're spending so much time complaining that we need to cover up all our game characters male and female alike.

I mean isn't the hint right there in the name? FINAL FANTASY.....FANTASY...HELLO? Its supposed to be a fantastic story about fantastic characters that would be literally unbelievable in reality.

Seems it wasn't a decision they were pressured into for political reasons.

Still plenty of gay pornography exists for the people upset about this.

Just because a character has a design that shows a lot of skin doesn't make it sexy by default.

There's good sexy design, and bad sexy design. The original costume was badly designed. They could have redesigned it from the ground up and kept it sexy, but it was obviously quicker and easier to just paste some textures on and call it a day.

Square Enix aren't exactly strangers to creating scantily clad male characters.

Kuja is wearing a cod piece g-string and a jacket that only covers his nipples... but it's a good design, fitting, he is rather eccentric.

I think it had less to do with people thinking the original attire for this new character was skimpy and more so they thought it looked stupid, and it did, it didn't look stupid because it was skimpy it looked stupid because it looked stupid.

See, my first thought was "what, did they give Gladio a shirt?"

But, no, they filled in the side of Bishounen McMobile Game.

To be fair, Final Fantasy's track record is pretty uhhh... mixed. Yoshitaka Amano in general tended to err on the side of "Lace is more effective than steel, right? You should be able to see the line of Cecil's ass through his armor, right?"
Plus X seemed to be set in the tropics since everyone except Auron wore at least airy clothing. Tidus and Rikku are about even for sluttiness imo.

Eh, not my cup of tea but I'll keep on supporting the concept that sex shouldn't be something we're afraid of. This kind of prudish mentality is pretty harmful to a society that will continue to have sex at some point as long as we're going to remain a society.

I will say that this character looks stupid for the same reason I've hated most of FF character design starting with FFX. They should maybe change him for that reason and make him look cool at least. But skin? Well, I will say that FF usually doesn't have women that skimpy either save for maybe Shiva.

This is just the latest case illustrating that Square Enix's designs are incredibly off-putting for western audiences. Not because they are too sexy, but because they look atrocious/stupid/uncool to many of us.

It is plainly obvious that their character's designs try to appeal to Japanese teenagers (especially the haircuts! just google "Japanese teenager hair" and what you get is potential images of FF characters...), but they look so uncool to Western audiences.

This is especially the case for designs of male characters. This is because the more or less general expectation in the Western World (especially in North America) is that men should not look like they spend too much time worrying about their appearance.

A men who looks like he puts a lot of effort into his clothes/hair is perceived as either effeminate, a d bag or as having a bad case of hipsterism (i.e. trying too much to be cool). This is the current cultural bias.

Most male characters since FF10 fall into one of these categories.

Now do it to the female characters, censor all, or censor none, likewise everyone is skimpy, or nobody is.
