No, they lose money because they dump all their money on shitty games. Imagine how much fucking advertising money they waste. If they instead funneled some of that Final Fantasy Cash into Deus Ex or Sleeping Dogs or Tomb Raider. Deus Ex could have been amazing, sleeping dogs and tomb raider could have been good.

The amount of FFC they waste on Final Fantasy is ridiculous.
They didn't make those games, though, only published them. As for them being good or not, that's a personal opinion.
In lieu of what Zach said (i was under the impression they didn't own any of these houses), square published the games. Correct me if I'm wrong, but publishers normally fund development, which is what gives them so much say in the final product. I only meant that they should have been funneling more cash into these houses.

You know what, Stop damning companies for wanting to tell people " No don't make money off streaming my game." While FF14 might be the wrong medium for something like this, It at least makes it not weird if a smaller company wants to do it.

But really TB needs to get off his high horse, saying something along the lines of " Well if your game is ruined because someone streams the entire thing and it loses more sales then it gains thats *your* problem." HOW do you make a game that's main point is to tell you a specific story or maybe change it up a bit on just choice, Much different from watching it to playing it. How is Anna really any different from watching it then playing it, how is amnesia, how is walking dead?

I mean lets face it right now Outlast is coming out in 3 days and the new Amnesia is coming out the week later, I'm strapped for cash and I know people like pewdiepie already have a copy, already said once it comes out it's being streamed, and the same for every other tom dick and harry wanting to make some youtube money by playing the game day one. Now while not getting paid isn't gonna stop all, but it will stop a good bit of people from "wasting" thier time streaming a game they can't get paid for.

You can call it wrong all you want but looking at people like pewdiepie's view count for I'm sure you'll be able to tell plenty of people rather or will watch the game instead of playing it.

Update for you all, SE is now allowing the monetization of FFXIV content:

http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/74797-Material-Usage-License-Update-Monetization-now-allowed%21

Material Usage License Update - Monetization now allowed!
Greetings,

We have listened to all of your feedback and are extremely happy to announce that as of today, we have put a new FFXIV Material Usage License into effect, which will allow monetization through partner programs that exist with Twitch.tv, YouTube, and other similar sites.

However, as many of you have already noticed there is a discrepancy in the actual text of the updated license, which is creating a bit of confusion. Please know that this is only a typo and we are working on having this text corrected.

I apologize for the confusion and hopefully this clarifies what is allowed.
Also, Yoshida personally apologized for all the problems going on in the game, and says that everyone who is currently playing will be given an extra free week on the subscription for their patience with all of the server problems. On September 4th they'll install the new servers and should be fixing everything up so we won't be running into those lovely Error 1017 and Error 90000 anymore.

EDIT: And you need to calm down a bit, That Annoying Guy. It's not like they've been sitting on their hands this whole time. Hell, I was able to play just fine for about 8 hours today. I had to fight through error messages just like everyone else, but you don't see me complaining.

EDIT 2: Aaaand one more edit just for Yoshi-P talking about why they put login restrictions in place, which contains a previous apology he made to the fans.

at least it wasn't for all their games like say...Nintendo (more or less?). seen a lot less of their content coming out as of late heh
unfortunate, but this could've been worse I guess :/

idk it gets messy for smaller YouTubers I'm sure

Copyright can actually really affect the larger ones too. The Networks many of them partner with will protect them for the most part, so long as they monetize the videos.
Really it's easy to deal with copyright when you can have a good enough argument, but the hard part is the wait because sometimes you just have to wait for the claim to time out later on.
Happened with me for my Kingdom Hearts Final Mix LP's finale as I had to go up against EMI Studios Japan because of Simple and Clean playing in the end.
No idea to this day how I won that claim...>.>

I agree. Final Fantasy is their baby. They're always going to consider it their "flagship" title, even though it's apparent that they will never find the lightning in a bottle that was FF7 again. That game came at the right time, which is why so many still say it's the best FF...because for most of them it was probably the ONLY FF game they've ever even played. Square Enix keeps trying to bring them back (and a broader general audience) instead of just making a FF for all of the FF fans who've stayed since then, or better still, the ones who actually played 1 through 6.

Tacking on a truckload of restrictions however is not the best way to do that though.

You do know that FF XI has been Square Enix's most profitable Final Fantasy title ever right? They're trying to recreate that lightning more than the lightning that was FF 7 anything because of how successful that old MMO was, and hell it's still going even today. That's why so many games seem to becoming like MMOs for them. For example, Dragon Quest 10 being an MMO instead of a tradition Dragon Quest game.

You are right though that FF 7 came at the right time since it was often times the first FF game people have played so nostalgia will dictate that to them it's the best Final Fantasy game ever. Heck if people were to actually go by scores though then Square Enix has only ever gotten 4 40/40 scores from Famatsu, back before they gave it to everyone and Famatsu are some of the toughest graders. Those two titles were Vagrant Story (3rd game to ever receive a 40/40 from Famatsu) and Final Fantasy XII (6th game to ever receive a 40/40 from Famatsu), Final Fantasy XIII-2 got a 40/40 (18th game on list), and finally Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Sky got a 40/40 (10th game ever) . Ironically 2 of them had their stories spearheaded by Yasumi Matsuno, but he left Square Enix in the middle of XII's development because the executives kept changing the story and messing with it (Basch and Balthier were supposed to be the main characters of FF XII, but the executives forced them to add in Vaan and Penelo because they felt that Basch and Balthier were too old to relate to).

Hey guys, I just noticed the new posts in this thread and I thought I should tell you that Square reversed their decision and you can now monetize FFXIV videos. YoshiP made an announcement at PAX a couple days ago.

You may not use the Materials for any sales or commercial use, meaning you cannot receive license fees or advertising revenue, except as part of the partner programs operated by YouTube.com, Twitch.tv, Ustream.tv, or similar programs. If the operator of a partner program seeks to confirm our policy, please point them to this page as we do not have the resources to respond to all requests.

That's what I guessed would happen really, mainly because it'd be suicide to do that, and especially after what happened when Nintendo tried that and people weren't too happy. I don't mind it if people have to go through a verified partner on YouTube or Twitch like being part of Machinima or TGS/Polaris since you have to work extremely hard to get into one of those ones. ^.^

For me it's not as bad as I don't monetize my videos, but it would be nice to have the cushion of a network like Polaris to help keep some of those Content ID Matches away. I can handle them, my proudest accomplishment on that being that I won a case against EMI Studios Japan when the credits for Kingdom Hearts Final Mix were playing, but it's still a long and stressful process to say the least. XD

Yeah, the Content Match ID system is a nightmare. I get content matched by channel's that have nothing to do with the video I posted. I just recently won cases against a German tv Youtube channel that content matched periods of silence with no content on screen in 5 of my videos. I can't believe Youtube let's people abuse the system like that. They wouldn't have made much money off of my videos, but it still pissed me off that someone forced ads into them.
