Eh. Like basically everyone else has said, they used to release fantastic, genre-defining games in their prime.
Now most of their new games are questionable, are milking their cash-cows, or are enhanced ports of games that've been put out 800 times.

Square-Enix could really make back a ton of money with a super shiny FFVII remake. However, they have a ton of other franchises they haven't touched which, if they made a correct sequel to, could easily give them new territory to work with that's not Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, or Dragon Quest.

The Chrono Series, obviously
Vagrant Story
Einhander (was actually a very good shooter)
The World Ends With You was one of the best DS games released, IMO.

To name a few.

Assuming that I understood all of that correctly, I'm sorry to hear that they are hurting so bad, but grateful that they are going to hopefully recover from this mess. Now might be a great time to invest in Square Enix stock though.

Time to call in the back up plans for guaranteed money.

1) Release Kingdom Hearts 3.
2) Release Final Fantasy XIII Versus or whatever we're calling it now.
3) Release Final Fantasy XV--and make it good, it will sell three times as much.
4) Release sequel to Final Fantasy VIII (okay, so I'm really the only one that wants that).
5) Release a new Chrono game.
6) Remake Final Fantasy VII on the PS3.

Follow these steps, and the company will be back in black immediately. :)
They are re-releasing Chrono Trigger again. It will hardly cost them a buck, but people will buy it for the new format. 100% profit.

Kingdom Hearts 1 is an early PS2 title. It's incredibly easy to find.
And all the sequeals and extended versions that reside on GBA, DS, and PSP? I'm arguing for Square to update or port everything they have to the current generations, not for them to continuously segment the market by making the previous games exclusive only to one or two systems.

To me, Square died in 2003 when it merged with Enix. This news only shows us that the lurid, zombified monstrosity of its remains has finally been put to rest, thankfully before it did further damage to Square's legacy.

Remake FF7 that should make you guys enough

Never played it but seem people seem to think it was the Second Coming of Christ via a PS Game...
No that was Bioshock, and it was on Xbox. Or maybe it was TF2. That's what everyone and their dog tells me anyway. More importantly though...

OT: Wow, that really must hurt. All that bad luck just came around just when they released a financially and critically disasterous game. It's like the universe just said, "now is the time to strike them down!"

Can i just say that I love Square Enix games? Is that allowed on the escapist? I enjoyed FFXIII, I found it to be very similar to past games in many respects? I really don't see any decline in quality, merely a change in style that started with VII? Yes, they've been expiramenting, but isn't everyone's big boo-hoo about JRPGs that they never do change?
No, you can't say you like Square Enix, that's basically taboo here on The Escapist.

Square Enix's games have been "bad"(I don't believe they are) because they changed the formula too much. Dragon Quest IX is deeply rooted in tradition, but most people will say it's definitely better than Final Fantasy XIII.

How about Enix? The Dragon Quest games are absolutely brilliant.

AUUUUUGH.

And I had a feeling Kingdom hearts 3d would be their last spinoff before finally getting to the third installment.

God dammit. I really hope they can pull through this.

KINGDOM HEARTS 1 & 2 FINAL MIX FOR PS3!!!!!
that would solve your problems
Sad thing is, even though I own both KH1 and KH2, I'd probably buy them both if the final mixes were released in America.

While they're at it, how about a PS3 port of birth-by-sleep?

It sucks that they are having a bad quarter... but it's only a single quarter.

Also, why all the hate towards FF12, it was great and is my second favorite after FF6. I liked the play style, it actually made grinding fun, and character development was great. I had hoped they would have released a version with Zodiac Job System in American, but no dice. I played it on an emulator though, fantastical really. I think FF7 was a good game, but I can't help but feel this was their first game with big bad summons and the rendered movies, and it was a milestone for the genre and industry... which made up for the fact that it wasn't that well written and the characters were mostly boring and bland. Not that FF12 characterization was that much better, but the battle system wasn't fluff either.

But damn.... FF13.... made by the same team who did FF10(which I thought was awful), nice looking, bad characters, interesting but ultimately mediocre battle system, just why?

I was just going to say, it makes me so sad to see FF12 hate. That game was fantastic! Glad to see I'm not alone.
