What did we learn from Ocarina of Time?

Fans begged for a remake for years and when we got it people still complained.

Opinion. FFXIII sold 1.5 million copies in the first week, and FFXIII-2 has sold 1.64~ million copies since February 4th.
If it's an opinion why try to disprove it with sales numbers?

I adored FFVII and wouldnt necessarily want to see a remake, its a classic for a reason. Its simple charm is what holds it up in the world, not everything needs to have physx, shiny graphics and and a remake. Remakes are generally terrible as the modern audience wants something different from the last generation. Change will piss off the people who made the game popular in the first place and the older aspects may put off newer players.

Square has a lot of cards on the table othet than the Final Fantasy series, the money is probably dispersed around multiple projects these days rather than just the one.

Not going to happen, and even if it could, this is one of those "Be careful what you wish for" scenarios. The two "Chrono" games came about due to a gathering of tremendous talent; talent which has running screaming in terror from Square-Enix since then.

They might be able to get Akira Toriyama back to do the visuals, but probably not anyone else.

If they just got back to their bread and butter, SquareEnix could be a massive brand again.
Out of curiosity, what do you think is their bread and butter specifically?
From what I remember, it's heroes saving the world from universal bads by utilizing the power of Crystals.

I think they need a new franchise. Something that spark some life into the jrpg setting. Or maybe they could team up with an existing franchise and make something magical. Maybe team up with the fable team and finally make a fable that can surpass lost chapters!

I love VII as much as the next guy but I rather have VII-2 starting Tifa :D
but really SE has other remakes I rather see right now because I would rather get a conclusion to the VII story (Dirge of Cerberus sorta ended with a cliffhanger) and I think these games would be amazing if brought to current portable gen graphics either 3DS or VITA

Brave Fencer Musashi
Xenogears
Seiken Densetsu 3

or how about a real sequel for

Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions
Einhander
Final Fantasy 4 Heroes of Light

Who got a remake? The mobile market. In "3D". I don't really think that qualifies as a modern HD remake. Just saying.

This.

Nobody was "entitled" the right for a remake, but people moaned about the conditions they would receive it.

I seriously don't get you people. Who cares about "HD remakes"? Better graphics won't change the fact that people will still moan about it.

... You do realize that what I was pointing out is that the OP suggest a FF7 HD Remake and you compare it to a directly ported (non improved) mobile game. Apples and oranges.

Personally I don't give a rats ass about OoT on 3DS.

Think I've already reached my quota as far as making "Why I hate Square-Enix" rants this month, so I'll simply say the short version: Every FF since FF8 has been crap in one way or another (with FF8 marking the beginning of the end).

That said, I don't really care about FF7 that much either. It was a good game, but I don't jizz my pants every time someone mentions the name Sephiroth.

As for why they're not remaking it: they could actually be telling the truth. It could take too much time to make...especially now that they've officially announced wanting to get on a "Call of Duty" schedule and crap out a new FF every single year.

Lot easier to mass produce crappy products than to make (or in this case re-make) a good one.

P.S. Obviously all of the above statements are opinion (except for the note about them wanting to pump out a new FF every year now), and I'm done arguing my point as to why I think the FF's have been in a rapid decline since FF8. So don't bother arguing that 9 was the best game in history or that you still have wet dreams about the black mage from 10 or that you play 10-2 while caressing your secret Barbie doll collection. I'm done trying to get people to stop buying crap games from what should be a dead company.

P.S.S. Yahtzee said it best: Square's been screaming at all it's fans "WE JUST WANT TO MAKE MOVIES, DAMNIT!!!" for years now but people keep throwing money at them to make games. :p (paraphrased)

My bad, but I think my point still stands.

You can't please Greeks and Trojans (must... not... make... condom reference) on that HD remake of FF7. There will be always people moaning because it's a game with a big number of fans.

Obviously if square wanted people to forget VII why would they still milk the franchise? They know what people want and they have not come out and said they will not make it period, they instead say its hard or come up with other mumbo jumbo. Until they straight up say we refuse to remake VII and it will not happen they had better expect people to still bug them with doing one. You cannot blame people for wanting to know what a HD or HQ remake could look like after seeing the quality of Advent Children, Crises Core and Dirge of Cerberus. But to make excuses of limitations when busting out with XI and XIV which use tons of resources and super large open worlds it kind of contradicts their stance.

Anyway, it does seem like pretty blatant trolling to do a FFX remake and not FFVII, with how long people have wanted it. Then again they've also ignored people's complaints about Kingdom Hearts, with the lack of consistent console choice and the lack of a "proper" sequel since KH2. Square must wallpaper their offices with posters that say "And not a single fuck was given that day."
Yeah, the FFX things is kind of a big slap to the face, but still, FFX would be significantly easier to remake than any of the PS1 games, and even a noticeably easier to remake than FFXII just because of how super linear X is.

I am actually a more annoyed that FFV and FFVI didn't get the same love as FFIV, which got both a solid 3D remake for DS and a gorgeous 2D remake for PSP.

I agree that the Kingdom Hearts series is getting out of hand as well. Versus XIII seems to have been lost in time too and DAMMIT MAKE ANOTHER CHRONO GAME!

*ahem*

See guys, there are plenty of things to complain about Squeenix without retreading the same tired old FFVII thing.
The FFX rerelease is likely going to be the same deal as the MGS/God of War collections, some minor graphical touch-ups and smoothing. Gotta agree with the comments about FF6, that game deserves some love. And Chrono Trigger needs an actual sequel.

I don't know what happened to me. In my younger years I was obsessed with rpgs especially jrpg's to the point where I would go out of my way to play even the most mediocre and bland ones. They made up like 90% of my gaming purchases and I remember paying full price for bland junk like Grandia xtreme and tsugani.

I tried the ff13-2 demo and found myself groaning and could not stomach the look of the k pop looking characters. The male looked like a copy / paste of Sora right down to the cartoony look and the female just looked ridiculous especially considering she can suddenly fight with the best in them when in the last game she was a repulsive and pointless japanese school girl only there for some perverts eye candy. Stupid, just stupid.

I hardly ever even consider jrpg's anymore. Of course I make acceptions (I got my Xenoblade pre-order) but now I play action games 70% and wrpgs 25% and jrpgs / strategy 5%, they have not held up while action continues to evolve. Now excuse me while I play some gears.

don't get me started on their failure XIV.
To be honest, XIV wasn't nearly as bad it as it was rated out to be, in my opinion.

Among the problems people complained about, were things like the console style UI.

Also, if people weren't so dead-set on not giving the game a second chance, it shows a lot of promise.

Anyone asking for a FF7 remake should be stabbed in the neck by a talking moogle/crossbow thing. Or maybe they should become Red XIII's breakfast, I don't know.
See, it's shit like this that confuses me.

1) What the fuck is wrong with you wishing harm on people for the smallest of reasons?

2) How the moderators overlook shit like this in favor of warning people for much less.

On topic, yes, they do have the resources and the money (or atleast they did when they lied that statement) because XIII and XIV most certainly weren't cheap in either funds or resources. Besides, whose bright idea was it to remake a PS2 game even though NO ONE was asking for that while ignoring a remake that fans have been asking for.

Stupid decisions like this are why Square Enix is in trouble.

Im not sure if they can do Xenogears since what is now Monolith Studios developed it and square only published.

I would love to see the continuation of Xenosaga into the final 5th chapter like it was originally planned, although I will not mind if they just decide to sidestep the whole drama and angst of the Xenosaga Universe and just carry on the Adventures of Kosmos in the Endless Frontier.

another part is that it is not "hip" to be a square-enix fan. almost for the same reason it is no longer hip to say that FF7 was a great game (or at the very least mention that FF6 is inferior to 7). 12 years ago people would come in droves saying how great it was and there would be a fierce debate between 6 and 7. now, if in a FF debate you dont profess your love of FF6 then your opinion is immediately disregarded in almost the same fashion as those who liked (not loved) ff 13. im not going to lie, i didnt like FF6.

Kefka was the only thing keeping that game from being one of the worst in my mind. he carried that game on his back like an evil atlas. That, and unlike sephiroth (another villian favorite of mine), kefka has actually aged well whereas sephs bad#$% imagery as faded with sequels/guest appearances. in fact he just comes across as creepy (although dissidia seems to redeem him a bit). as you can imagine, i loved kefka, but that is not enough to make a game great in my mind.

I liked FF13, and im not afraid to admit it. the game has flaws. oh boy did the game have flaws. extremely linear, 35 hour tutorial, and held your hand WAY too much in the begining. and to top it off vanille. i have never hated any characters very existence as much as i hated hers. in fact the only time her character was manageable was when she was suicidal. however, its strengths (graphics, music, battle system, villian dialog, character development) outweighed its flaws. that said, i can perfectly understand why someone would believe why the strengths dont outweigh its flaws, thats fine.

i liked sazh, lightning, snow, and hope. the combat system is the best one i have experienced to date in any rpg. I dont mind cutscenes within reason (45 minutes straight of cutscenes with no breather), in fact the story is the main reason for me to play a JRPG and cutscenes are some of the best ways to move the story forward. If you dont like cutscenes or lengthy stories then you should not play JRPGs are stick with WRPGs where the story does not get in the way of the action.

yes, im a bit apprehensive about SE strategy as of late. it seems like they are trying to go the route EA did in the early 2000's by squeezing money out of the names of their big franchises rather than making great games (front mission evolved, im looking at YOU!)

First off, I actually enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII and have been enjoying Final Fantasy XIII-2, so I don't think your statement of them being crap should be used as more than an opinion. I haven't played either MMO's though (my rule being to refuse to play any game with a monthly fee), so I don't know how good or bad they are outside of other people's opinions.

Second, doing a complete HD remake of Final Fantasy VII would be major investment in resources. Final Fantasy XIII had the advantage of a fairly linear layout and no town locations and it still took four years to make it look as good as it did! Now imagine having to do all of that for a game of VII's depth and complexity. Sure, they would have the bare bone basic designs to work off of, but they're still going to remodel and reprogram every aspect of the game to fit with today's standards. We're talking about a project that would take at least six years to complete (the time it's currently taking to make Versus XIII), and that's if we're being conservative.

Comparing with Xenoblade Chronicles, a game developed for the Wii which, while complex in gameplay, is of lower graphical and presentation quality than what graphical whore Square Enix would do for an HD console release. And that took them four years as well: http://www.nintendo.co.uk/NOE/en_GB/news/iwata/iwata_asks_xenoblade_chronicles_32883_33157.html

see now, i cant really see a remake of FF7 being that bad resource wise.

i mean, they already have the music (they can use remixed versions from advent children or black mages)

they have the story

they have the dialogue

they have the voice actors

all that is left is the graphic engine (and hell, when ps3 first came out they had a FF7 teaser). but what do i know?

As the Jimquisition has stated, Square Enix just likes to announce new games without any definitive plans to release them within the same year that they were announced. They have a laundry list of titles to get through or scrap before they can even get to some obvious fan requests, like Final Fantasy VII with an HD twist.

They should stop announcing anything that sounds like a good idea, and just focus on finishing what's on their plate before asking for seconds or thirds.
