There's that thing again that puzzles me. I'd thought it would be sona , 'cause Lá is masculine. But most of the time i see it with the h.

Bah. I'm Irish, and I hate St Patricks day. Or rather, I hate the kind of people it brings out of the woodwork in Ireland. Hence, I avoid it.

Still, it's nice to celebrate Irishness, and have a party and that. Just leave me alone while you do it. I shall stay in with my friends, and do horribly illegal things.

I can understand your annoyance at the way some choose to celebrate St. Patrick's day, but at least your country's patron Saint gets recognition one way or another, and people celebrate at least a few aspects of your culture, country and history or whatever.

No fucker over here celebrates St. George's Day, apart from the clergy probably, and a few die-hards. Maybe that's because there's nothing worth celebrating, but I'd like to belive there is...

Just got back from St. Paddy's Day bar night at Uni. Free Guinness and Green Beer ! Good times, good times. Could have done with some Irish music though.

I can't stand St. Patrick's Day. For the Irish it's great and I am really happy for you that you get to have a day just for yourselves and that you know how to celebrate it.

That is of course my jealousy being that most English people don't even know when St. George's is. What grates me is that sheer number of not Irish or not even slightly Irish people that tag along just because it is so booze-centric.

Poor form rest of the world.

Heh, well, my Irish isn't exactly grammatically exact! You could be right, of course. I can speak Irish well enough, it's the writing it that's the bloody hassle

I found Kerry's dialect very easy to follow. Not so much the Ulster one!

Jaysus can't wait to be hitting up Cork city tonight with the lads. My first Paddy's day that I'm of legal age so it should be a good one. I think I'm starting the drinking at about 4 up in my mates house. It will be good but I'm absolutely dreading the hangover in the morning.

yeah exactly, its easy to understand but it contradicts very often to what i learned. But damn as long as we understand each other (and the most people dont ) its alright.

Some advice my boss gave me the first week i worked at the place: One can only get hungover if one stops to drink.

And indeed- it's full of more local sayings than you can shake a stick at, but I feel that makes it more authentic, more real than anything they come up with in Trinners' Irish Department. I'll rant about the gulf between genuine spoken Irish and the stilted lifeless written modern Irish (not referring to the poetry, but the official documents the poor language is hammered into) another time- but like you said- if we can understand one another, then that's all you want, really
