Soda bread is fucking awesome :3
I may be wrong but isn't Northern Ireland's national colour orange? It probably has something to do with that. Also, what is soda bread?

Me and a few friends celebrated at a pub in town. I live in Sweden though, so it's not exactly big. We went to an irish pub at least, which celebrates it every year with cheaper beer and live bands and such. Basically, it was just drinking and singing, being very stereotypically irish.
I'm Swedish, what bar was this? I shall make sure to go next year.

Well I think there's quite a few Irish or Irish-descendants in the north-west so there's some sort of official celebration somewhere but mainly it's just a themed night out.

I like it because one of my favourite, and normally expensive, drinks is quite cheap on Saint Patrick's: Guinness.

It's a fun, themed holiday for pubs in Edmonton. Pubs will have bag pipes and Celtic music. This is usually ironically, but I actually kind of like it. Guinness is served with great gusto, which I have no problems with. And drink specials are good. Plus, the pub I go to frequently has a really good "Irish stew" on St. Patrick's Day, and a couple of contests.

Pubs open early (10 or 11 am), and people drink.

But I could do without the tacky green accessories, the girls dressed in slutty green, and people pretending to be Irish. Do wear green clothes, but there's no need for the plastic chains, and massive, tacky, cloverleaf sunglasses.

Honestly, I forgot that it even existed this year. Of course I don't drink nor am I Irish so I probably wouldn't celebrate it either way.

It used to be a much bigger deal though back in elementary school, where everyone pinches you if you didn't wear green.

I spent it eating Soda Bread, Kimberley biscuits and drinking pink lemonade.

My nan made the soda bread, we have stockpiles of Kimberley biscuits around the place and pink lemonade because I always associate it with visiting my aunts and uncles over in Ireland.

At the weekend my cousins, uncles, aunts and assorted others are coming over here (England) and we are going for a meal and then a drink-the-bar-dry.
The bolded part gave away that you're in/from the UK or Ireland. Not many people say this unless British/Irish in my experience.

OT:

I'm an Aussie. It passed me by without notice.

Normally I'd wear a green suit/normal suit with a green tie and get drunk.

It's a celebration of Catholicism being brought to Ireland.

In England, or at least whereI'm from here (the south) nobody cares at all. Or maybe I don't pay enough attention. Anyway, I probably wouldn't know when it was if it wasn't for people talking about it on the internet.

Technically its about celebrating Saint Patrick and how he built the first church or something but not one really cares about that. Its a day to get drunk. Iv lived in England all my life till i moved to Ireland for Uni, paddys day is definitely one of my favourite days of the year. Everyone is in such a good mood, traditional Irish music is class and most of the pubs hand out Stew. Its just a day of people having fun and generally being happy

Of course iv had two very good experiences of it. I go to Coleraine uni, now Coleraine is small and full of Students and students dont really give a shit about anything BUT if you go into Belfast or Dublin (two Big cities) i hear people tend to get a bit... Stabby

It all depends on your company really.

How old are you? God that sounds really personal, but in Newcastle i never once was aware anyone celebrated it until i was 18. Then i noticed most nightclubs put something on. Like you can go all day not knowing theres a difference until the clubs open and suddenly everywhere is celebrating st.paddys

Least thats what its like in the toon

Isn't that because you wear orange in Northern Ireland? Please be aware I'm not being nasty - I don't really know enough about this myself - but isn't the Northern Irish equivalent of St.Patrick's day the Orangeman's march?

Here in Australia it really is an excuse to get drunk stupidly. Which is strange because any day is a good excuse to get drunk stupidly in Australia.

I do celebrate Paddys Day however that's because of the very dominant Irish heritage on my Mother's side. I'm sure much of the nuances of St.Patrick's day have been lost, however I'm to understand according to the legend, St Patrick came to Ireland, drove out all the snakes and introduced Christianity to the people.

Oh incidently what is soda bread and what does it taste like?

in the UK it's really just a massive piss up and a day where bars give away silly hats for drinking lots of Guinness *sigh* I wish Christmas was more like that.

I celebrate it by giving false directions to tourists.

And making up shit to confuse tourists.

I bloody hate St Patrick's day. It's the one day of the year where the stereotypes of Ireland get made OK to do and it pisses me off a lot. How would you all feel if on let's say the fourth of July you had millions of tourists pretend to be big fat and stupid in america because it is the stereotype.

Or if on Bastille Day millions of people decided to show up in stripy jumpers smoking cigarettes and wearing berets while surrendering in France? Or if on St. Georges day loads of people showed up with fake bad teeth and horrible cooking while drinking tea?

It drives me up the bloody wall. And then there is the fact that our PM has to go to Washington DC and act like a fool in front of the US President to appease the Americans. And never mind the number of politicians who decide to feck off around the world at the taxpayers expense just on the flimsy excuse that there is one Irish person in Hawaii who might hold a parade.

You wear green or you get pinched. White people like to use it as an excuse to drink. I wore a green shirt not for St. Patrick's Day, but because I am eco friendly.
Presumably meaning other races don't need an excuse to drink?

I am about half Irish and I don't know the specifics except that allegedly St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland. Oh, and also that the Irish are known for drinking.

Most people get 'shteamboats' [drunk, in case anybody was wondering], to use the Sligo parlance. The streets are not a good place to be from circa 2 in the afternoon on that holiest of days.

Personally, I missed the parade then tried lysergic acid diethylamide for the first time and spent the next twelve hours being fascinated by everything.
