Like, you can make it the grittiest grit story about grit in a city of grit, but please, have someone reading the script who can go 'man, you fuckers are just phoning it in here, aren't you' or 'How about we include an arc for our protagonist?'.

It's all I want. Someone on the team who is there to make a good movie, not just a paycheck. Because fuck me sideways, is that all BvS felt like - a grubby cashgrab trying to be edgy because the Avengers already did the 'fun' one.

Exactly, I'm the voice of fuckin' experience here. I know my edgy.

BvS was edgy for the sake of it. There was no rhyme or reason to it. It didn't exist to flesh out the world, or develop characters, or do anything a narrative device is supposed to do. It was just there to be 'cool'. Why's Batman shoot people? Who the fuck cares, edgy! Why's he got a hate boner for Superman? Who cares, edgy! Why's Superman die at the end right when he was showing some character? EDGY!

Like, I'll take gritty and grimdark. It's not like Batman hasn't had gritty and grimdark stories before. Shit, some of his best stories have been his darkest. I just don't like it when the story is being edgy out of a desperate attempt to be different. Safe bet says that if you cut all the edginess out of BvS, you'd get a far better movie, since it wouldn't be stumbling over itself every 5 minutes to establish just how grim everything is.

Gotta say I disagree. Saw BvS yesterday, and as much as there was a whole ton of things wrong with it, Batman bits were good. I certainly picked up on the old, jaded Batman vibes- 'That's the thing about criminals Alfred, they're like weeds- You remove one and another just springs up in its place'. It makes sense, clearly he got tired of all the years of Batmanning and things not improving as much as he wanted.

It makes sense; perhaps the Batprequel will show how he got to be quite so bitter about everything. Given that Affleck is directing, we might actually get a good movie here.

I felt the Batfleck bits were good in spite of the role - can't shit on the man, he acted the hell out of whatever drivel they gave him, and him directing the prequel might be a saving grace.

The thing is though, we've already had old, jaded Batman, in the comics and cartoons. Even then, he didn't say 'fuck it' and become the monster he's always fought against. He's certainly cynical and jaded about the fact that there is always criminals no matter what he does, but picking up a gun and killing people is just... so against him as a character. Even after the death of Robin he didn't kill the Joker, so that being his character motivation never quite... clicked for me in BvS.

I will say, what I am forever disappointed about with the DCU movies is that they didn't go the risky route and play them off as the Justice Lords. Justice Lord Batman would kill criminals 'for the greater good' (even lobotmizing his rogues). Or a Flashpoint kind of AU, where it's not Bruce Wayne as Batman, but instead Thomas Wayne, a man broken by the death of his young son, taking his rage and hate out against the criminals of Gotham by murdering the shit out of as many as he can.

But no, instead we got a Batman who kills, for reasons that go against his character and with no sense of awareness. And it's just... so disappointing.

I always wanted David Bowie to play Freeze. Thought he'd be a perfect fit for the character. Seeing as he's dead, that dream will remain as it is.


As for this Batfleck movie. I wouldn't expect any kind of crazy, awesome Batman story. We're likely going to get something that swings closer to the Nolan era Batman movies. They were pretty successful and WB is hurting for some good DC movies, so they may play it safe in order to save their extended universe. Which is a shame; I want something crazy from a Batman movie.

Give me a movie where Joker threatens to dose Gotham with his laughing gas unless Batman performs alongside him in a musical!
