I’ve poked plenty of fun at Star Citizen over the years for its crazy playerbase consistently transferring money from their own banks directly to Cloud Imperium Games, but the truth is, I was an early backer of the game too, more than a decade ago in fact.
From memory, I paid around £100 to get into the beta at the same time as I did for Elite Dangerous, which, over the years, I went all in on, where I probably never really ‘played’ Star Citizen. Of course, a decade ago, you couldn’t play Star Citizen. You could walk around the ship they gave you and give them more money for other ships to walk around, but you were buying into a promise, a dream, and one that somehow captured so many imagines of what one day might be. I still believe, as do many, that I will reinstall the game again at some point in the future, and progress keeps being made. Whether it will ever truly be finished, though, well, I still have my doubts.
